I would! idk where you're looking, but I've read a fair few fics that look at it from a sociological angle (plus porn). Unfortunately all the best ones I've found for this were all unfinished, but still!

I've pretty much avoided this trend, so I have to admit I don't know the nuances of how it works, but I think I'd read that, OP.

Especially if it was about the omegas' place in society and they fought for their rights without changing their sexuality. I think in the real world there is a lot of prejudice against bottoms or sexually submissive people of any sort, and I always really like seeing fic that makes a character who bottoms or submits sexually a strong person. Especially when it's not the same tired "Oh, s/he submits in bed, so in real life s/he's a snippy ball-buster who bosses everyone around!" but a thoughtful, carefully created and well-rounded, and complex character.

If that's what you're thinking of writing or inspiring, I'd read the hell out of it.

I've read a couple of fics that touched upon the sociological side of things along with the porn. I'd also like to see more of that!

i wish people would read more omegaverse fic before writing secrets like this because there are tons of fic already exploring this which makes the "but who would be interested?????" part of the secret utterly moot.

I don't know if you know Stargate Atlantis at all, but you might like Take Clothes Off As Directed by helenish (http://helenish.talkoncorners.net/asdirected.html). This was before the Alpha/Omega craze and is instead just a regular old BDSM universe, but it has the sociological consequences part down.

I don't like the alpha/omega thing but I would read about that I think. Like, I mean, I like a bunch of published stories that replace any sort of minority struggle and watching them succeed. It brings hope for people in real life and not only lets us root for the underdog but feeds our sense of justice.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd read it! I kind of love the Alpha/Beta/Omega fic stuff just because of the societal implications and all that good shit. :D best part! (Okay, sometimes it's hot, but only if it's not rapey... which is why I don't really read the fic despite liking the idea of it. Too much rape.)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not familiar with this kink at all, but from the secrets on FS I always imagine it to be sort of like an AU based on Love (Sex) Pistols (the BL series).

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I would LOVE to read more fic like that. I've seen some (linked at some point from the SPN kinkmeme, a few months ago I think) that did look into the sociological implications... characters who wanted to be betas but were biologically omegas and such, how they were treated and what they did about it. It could easily be read allegorically, imo, as what it's like to want something other than the assigned gender role you're given.
Some touched on what a "pack" type structure would mean when it came to a similar-to-modern-day society, and whether there'd be some kind of political or sociological fight between "pack" families and nuclear families.

I agree that a lot of the alpha/beta/omega dynamic fics are all about the porn, without any potential social critique or whatnot thrown in... and I'd love to see more that DO use that type of story to make a point. But I don't think that's a nonexistent thing, either.

That said, any actual alpha/beta/omega fic recs for this kind of thing would be awesomely welcome! I've read actually very few, but am interested to see different things that authors could do with it.

I would actually be really interested in reading this idea. Omegaverse kind of fascinates me- can there be alpha/beta females? Would alpha/beta females have penises? If male omegas can get pregnant, then wouldn't having females be kind of redundant? How do they deal with that? It could be a fascinating exercise in worldbuilding/speculative fiction.

Unfortunately, I've only ever seen one story like that and it was clear from the first chapter that it was an SJW clusterfuck. The author clearly had a problem with anyone who wasn't her exact brand of militant... I don't even know if that could be classified as feminism, but for the sake of argument I'm going to say militant feminism, because it was like reading something written by the ghost of Andrea Dworkin. Anyway, I managed about two chapters before I went "lol nope" and back-buttoned.

Done well, I would read the fuck out of a fic like this. But in the hands of someone with a specific political agenda... well, it probably won't be any good. Let's just leave it at that.

Sometimes I'll read a fic that plays with the idea, but doesn't really take it all the way. Alpha Spikes (granted, it's Teen Wolf fandom), for instance, tries to mix in werewolf alpha stuff along with going against the in-universe grain of putting omegas "in their place." But it's in the background, never fully played with, and it's actually just an elaborate excuse for pwp alpha/omega pining fic (still a fun read though).

I feel like there are fics that deal with what is essentially multiple gender roles, but I have never actually found them. There are certainly metas. [livejournal.com profile] velvet_mace's post on it is the one that first comes to mind, and I know for certain that folk discuss this on tumblr but fuck if I remember to organise my system of likes into something I remember :(

People will eat your fic up though if you try it. Or at least I will.

Pretty much my exact feelings. I love the world and how flawed it is and how awesome it could be and how it mirrors our own universe and all the potential. I've actually read a couple fics along those lines, but I don't have links. They do exist, though! There just aren't many of them.

I'm really intrigued by the dynamics an omega!verse could have, both for the characters on a personal level and for society as a whole. But the kinks that (I assume?) are always present in the porn make me hesitant to read them. I'm not a big fan of dom/sub fics, or knotting, or any of those. I'm curious as to how the omega!verse would change the relationships between characters, but I'm afraid my tastes are too vanilla to enjoy most of those fics.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-07-16 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I like reading this kind of thing too but I can understand why it's not more common. Omegaverse is kind of an escapist fantasy where people go to indulge their more problematic fantasies without dealing with RL issues. I think the kind of people who would be into what you are talking about don't make up the majority of people who are currently reading Omega!verse so what you're proposing seems like it's a different animal entirely (pun intended). Or that's my take on it anyway.

I think that's the only way I'd read one of those alpha/omega fics. Tbh, I think part of the reason those AUs turn me off is because it seems like a good way to make women irrelevant and just have societies full of men...and I already have a hard time choking down normal universe fics that are huge sausage fests.

That kind of stuff has been explored in the BDSM AU fics I've read (aka the Directedverse.)
I think with kinks like this, they start out as smut and not much else, and then people start to play with the social concepts and implications in the fics. Start writing and posting, anon, it'll catch on.

Yeah, I'm pretty much only interested in the sociological potential of omegaverse stories, too. Power imbalances, lubricating butts, estrus, and mpreg don't ring bell my bell at all. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother to poke my head into such fics now and then if I'm not into that stuff and this secret reminded me. But even the few fics that do explore social revolution alongside the porn still end with the omega submitting to his perfect alpha and producing their perfect babies. I want omegas who defy traditional roles entirely, not compromise with them. But I understand that the genre is not intended for me if that's my kink.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm actually very baffled by this secret because the vast majority of the fics in this vein that I've read deal with exactly this.

And the female alpha is, while not a common focus because most a/b/o are in slash genres, fairly well represented. They are mentioned. Sometimes they are discriminated against they are different just like the omegas are. Often times there are various methods of explaining sex with one, but again there are various solutions to this. A/B/O is a kink and fancy solutions to a 'problem' is always popular in a kink world.

When the fan trope started in my fandom, at least two or three dealt with discrimination against male alphas because of their knots and how society viewed them as animal when they're not.

Maybe it is the fandom you're in that isn't looking at it closely?

But then, you say you don't like the trope to begin with, so it is likely not worth your time to continue digging into a kink that you admittedly dislike.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
How the hell do people go 'no one reads that/writes that! woe~'? So far I've seen maybe twice the number of ~social implications~ fic than the straight-up porn and seen three times the number of prompts in just one fandom. So the answer to your question is : pretty much a large portion of fandom. You're not that special a snowflake, OP! Rejoice!

Also, if omega!men having assvaginas isn't improbable, why is alpha!women having big clits or even extra dicks (a trend that already exists in porn as 'futa') so improbable? Honestly, the lack of existence of even the thought of futa, in both the ABO haters and unfortunately the writers too, is more internally misogynistic than most things even in straight ABO porn. It's like fandom can't even imagine women having 'a man's role' in a fantasy world with fantasy anatomy, because vaginas are common and anyone can have them and any orifice can stand in for them, but DICKS! OMG the ~sacred dicks~. Cannot be replicated or stood in for. *sage nod*

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I randomly came across this plot device too and actually found one Avatar fic that is kinda all about the social implications of the alpha and omega roles and less about the actual sex.

It's about the AU!Gaang dealing with puberty and discovering what role they biologically fit into. It's rather fascinating to me and it's fun to guess what sort of role each character would have based on personality and environment.

Here's the link:

http://archiveofourown.org/works/448150/chapters/767480

I think I find this concept fascinating because it completely skews our notions of gender which have always been defined socially by our reproductive roles.
