As someone who has been stuck in a career she hates for quite some time because I took a job just to pay the rent after college, I have to say it's really not as simple as that. Yeah, people change careers, or they did before the economy took a plunge, but it can be incredibly difficult to do. I've been trying for years, and no one will hire me into any other field because I'm a senior-level professional so they won't hire me into an entry- or mid-level position, but since my experience is in an area that I really don't want to work in, no one will hire me for senior-level positions in fields I do want because they (rightfully) want someone with senior-level expertise in their field. A friend of mine is running into the same issue. "You can always change your career" is simply not a blanket true statement.

On the other hand, neither is "You will be stuck with this job FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, and if you don't make the right choice at 21 you will be miserable until you die."

AYRT

Yeah, I get that. I wasn't trying to imply it was a certainty, just that the way the above commenters presented it made it seem like changing careers is as easy as changing your major in college, which is a total crock. Thing is, people told me when I took the job I have right now exactly what all of these people are telling OP. But I am stuck, have been for years, and even though intellectually I know it's not my fault because I see it happening to my peers too, I can't help feeling in my heart like a complete failure because I've been unable to "just change careers," which is supposed to be this thing that everyone does nowadays. No, OP won't necessarily be stuck in the first career they choose if they hate it, but they might be, and it doesn't do them any favors to pretend it's not a possibility.

Oh, I definitely don't think a career is to be chosen lightly, and I have friends who tried to change careers without success. And I'd never presume to say that changing careers is easy. Only that it's not impossible--and that your life isn't necessarily ruined forever if you choose a career that's wrong for you.
