I know I'm WAY late to this thread, but as a teacher myself, I felt the need to chime in.

I LOVE my job. That's why I do it for shitty pay. I love it despite not knowing the next time I'll actually get a raise, putting up with stupid politics and administrators who don't actually talk to us and getting our opinions before making a decision, seeing that schools on all levels are being taken in the wrong direction (who needs electives like band/choir, art, drama, etc. SCREW THE RESEARCH THAT SAYS OTHERWISE! /sarcasm), parents that just don't care, No Child Left Behind, super long hours, students who are determined to fail and make my life hell, hours of planning, grading, and inputting grades only to have students throw their work away after barely glancing at the grade they got (feed back, I don't care about feedback! /sarcasm again), on top of volunteering to sponsor after school activities without getting paid extra because only coaches get that stipend.

And this is really just the tip of the ice berg.

Like any job, if you don't like it, it's going to eat your soul and you'll end up hating your life.

For teaching, you can multiply all that times infinity.

DO NOT GO INTO TEACHING IF THAT'S NOT WHAT YOU WANT TO DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand needing a job to pay the bills while you work on the one that you really want. My dream job is not teaching. I LOVE it, but it's not what I aspire to be. I understand, however, that in order to get my dream job (author, by the way), I'm going to have to do this job that isn't my dream job but that I still love until I make it as an author. And I may never truly make it as in author in the sense of J.K. Rowling or Stephen King or even Stephenie Meyer. I may have to teach for the rest of my life even after I manage to get published, but since I love teaching, I'm okay with that.

So, OP, the moral of this little story is that while you may recognize that you may need an alternate job while you work towards becoming a VA to pay for, ya know, living, it really does make a difference for you to choose a job you love as well, or at least a job you'll enjoy.

And teaching, just don't ever become a teacher if that's not what you want to do. I can't emphasize that enough.
