You do not have to be a teacher.

Teaching is a demanding job--there's not only the actual classroom hours, but the time you'll spend planning, grading, sitting in worthless meetings (which often eats into the time you'd spend planning or grading). There's also a lot of bullshit. You will be considered nothing more than a babysitter and yet entirely to blame for all of your students' problems. If you're working in K-12, many school districts and classrooms are all but designed to burn people out.

It is a difficult job even if you enjoy aspects of it. It is better to disappoint people now then to spend a few years of your life stressed out and miserable (and for pretty shit pay).

Why would anyone want you to be a teacher? Shitty pay, annoying people to deal with, more work at home, bullshit from parents..etc. Weird.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Both my mother and grandmother were teachers and say that it's one of the worst jobs in the world. However, both of them finally gave it up and ended up being social workers and translators (they both taught ESL).

Maybe get the degree to fall back on, but take this to heart: we're in an era where very few people devote their lives to one job. Loads of people find work completely unrelated to their diploma, and others go back to school and get another one.

So tell everyone to shut it and do what makes you happy. No one can tell you what to do with your life.

You can probably do both. You might start by seeing if there's any volunteer work for reading books for blind kids around (great place for silly voices) or try sending some recordings of your voices to folks, or put them up on youtube. It will take a while to get jobs, though, so having the teaching certificate will be useful.

Believe me when I say this: they will be less disappointed than you think. I hope I don't sound rude, but it probably isn't as big a deal as you think it is. They may pitch a fit at first, but it's highly unlikely they're going to hold it against you for years. And if they do, they're not people worth pleasing. Certainly not worth sacrificing your dream career just for their approval (not their happiness, or their financial security, or their family bonds).

No. Don't do that. Cause if you go into a profession that you aren't enthusiastic about, you'll most likely end up hating it and/or resenting everyone. And no one needs that.

Or, you could be lucky and actually enjoy it, but that's a smaller chance than hating/resenting it.

There's no harm in doing a few VA or radio drama auditions, is there? You may as well try it before throwing the towel in.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Before you make the decision, consider that this is the job that you'll end up spending the rest of your life doing. Even if they are disappointed, at the end of the day you are the one who's going to have to live with this decision every day until you retire, and even after that. This is your life, and you only get one of them. No one else will have to live with this decision except you, so you owe it to yourself to do what you want.

Ask yourself if this is really want you want; if you want to be a teacher, then good. It sounds like you really don't, though. Doing a job that you don't want for the rest of your life is generally not a good thing. You're the one who will live with that decision, and any regret that you'll most likely have for not doing the other.

Get some coaching and contacts, set up a home studio, and do it part time.

Also, it's your life. You're the one who has to live it and live with your choices. You'll end up hating them and hating your life, especially if you teach. It's thankless work, and more and more parents blame you when their kids fail. There are those who excel and, I'm told, make the all the crap worth it, but I'm not sure I believe them.

I think you should start looking into opportunities to to do voice acting and if "everyone" gets nervous, just tell them it's a hobby, like how some people do community theater without having any serious aspirations of being professional actors.

If you start having real success with voice acting, I bet "everyone" will forget all about how you were supposed to be a teacher.

With the caveat that people who don't want to be teachers really shouldn't become teachers...

These things aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. I run my school's anime club and my kids were talking about using our time to make fandubs and the like.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Look at it this way: As a teacher, you have more holidays than a lot of other people. Use that time to get into voice acting part time - but be prepared that this is a very, very popular field of work. As a voice actor, even a professional one, you're mostly unemployed with a few jobs here and there, so having a real job that pays the bills is important. But don't give up on your plans, the worst that could happen is you won't get any jobs with your voice acting. At best, you might actually be lucky and give up teaching to do the voice acting full time.

Being a teacher is a pretty cool gig, but if it's not what you want then you shouldn't force yourself just because of outside pressure. Do what you want.

Because honestly, if you don't want to be a teacher but force yourself to go that direction just to make others happy, you'll probably end up being a pretty miserable bitter awful negative teacher. And then nobody wins.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Voice acting was my childhood dream, and although I work in a totally different field right now, everyone I've talked to about it says that as dreams go, it's a pretty great one to pursue part time, since it's largely freelancing, and you're not going to have a steady job doing it for quite a while even if you "break in". So I second everyone who says try it out, OP! Go to some auditions! Do some research! Get started in a small way and see if you still love it. And if you're unhappy with your training as a teacher but aren't yet a fabulous voice-acting superstar, there are lots of other things that a teaching degree can help you do, particularly if you also have a subject specialty. Most of the people I know (I'm in my late twenties) are doing things unrelated to their degree field.

I bet you'll be great, OP! <3

Wow, OP, don't do this to yourself. It's your life so your expectations should be the ones that matter most.

My mom could've been a pro artist, she had the skills, but she became a teacher for practical reasons and the job ate her alive. Teaching in particular is not a good job to pick if you don't feel like you truly want to teach.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
please don't be a teacher if you don't want to. do you know how many shitty and/or asshole teachers i've had who have made me completely hate the subjects they taught? yeah, they probably didn't want to be teachers, either.

Look it's not my business...but, do not choose a career path for someone else .

You might be okay at first, but it will slowly suck the fire from your soul.

Doing voice-overs is the riskier option, but if that's your dream, at least give yourself the shot of trying to achieve it.

And even if you can't make it in that world, that path might lead you to interesting other options.

Adding to that, being a teacher specifically should be the sort of thing that should only be done by people who are passionate about it: so you can inspire and motive kids.

Op, you owe it to yourself to try (and those kids deserve a teacher who actually wants to be doing that job) - don't give up on your dreams. You will regret it - maybe not now, but somewhere down the line.

DON'T BE A TEACHER. If it's not what you genuinely want to do, then for god's sake DO NOT BECOME A TEACHER. As a teacher, you will be an influence on the lives of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of students. And if it's not what you want to do and you resent being pushed into the job, you will not be good for any of those students.
omorka: (Educator At Work)

[personal profile] omorka 2012-07-15 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Do not, I repeat, do not become a teacher if you don't feel called to teach. You need to either love helping kids, or love your subject so much you want to give it to other people. If you go into it without one of those two motivations (some combination of the two is best, but one or the other will do), this job will suck your soul out within your first three years, you'll end up leaving the profession for something else anyway before you hit your ten-year mark, and you will hurt kids in the process between when you lose your soul and when you bail out. If there is anything else at all you'd rather do, do that instead.

I come from a family full of teachers and initially was going to be a teacher myself. I eventually decided - because I had so much insight into what teachers actually deal with - that it wasn't what I wanted to do. I wasn't passionate about it. So I found something I was and went for that instead, and everyone who was so happy I was going to be a teacher got over it. This is your life not theirs and there's no reason you need to sacrifice your dreams.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Please don't choose a career based on what's expected of you or what everyone else thinks you should do. That's just going to cause unhappiness throughout your life. Do what you want to do.
