So... It's ok if the borrow a book from a friend instead of downloading a pdf?
And if they buy a second hand book instead of a new one they are also "stealing"?

Because either way the creators don't get any money...

Yes. It is unreasonable. And you know why? Because the prices are high. Because not everyone has the same chances as you (in the case you, or OP do) or other people may have. We talk about piracy being unreasonable again when money is not restricted to such a small group of people, and the prices are not so unfair.
