I have been hearing people say what this secret says for literally almost 15 years, and yet I have never actually heard a scanlation-reader attempt to excuse themselves by saying that manga was too expensive. I mean maybe they feel that way internally, but I've never actually heard it used aloud.

I've heard it said with every manga-reader I've met in real life, outside of fandom. Online no one will admit to it, in real life they're like, "oh yeah I read manga. Oh I don't actually own that much -- I mean, why would I have to buy it?"

Though I should probably add that most manga readers I meet in RL are between 13 and 20 and really are short on cash. That is to say, they do almost verbatim tell you they can't afford to spend their money on it.

Most of the manga readers I know IRL say they don't buy much because there isn't (/wasn't) much available over here, especially translated stuff.

I'll say it then. Manga (in the USA, at least) is too expensive for me to buy every series that I might be interested in, without at least previewing an extensive bit of it (because gawd series run long now) via illegal or dubiously legal (is reading in a bookstore and fucking up the covers/cracking spines on new books without buying anything okay?) means in order to ensure that the investment, so to speak, is worth the expense.

Fucking this. And damn am I EVER glad I read, up to a point, Naruto online instead of buying the series. I tried to. I'd buy a book here and there when I could afford it. But after a certain point in the scanlations, when the story took a dive for the worse and never got back up good again and GOES ON AND ON AND ON FOREVER AND EVER AND EVER, I'm glad I dropped it and never bought more than 5 volumes.

That whole series would have been nearly a grand of wasted money. A grand that could go into a new computer or into a savings account to save up on to buy a freakin' car, which I sorely need right now.

Fucking this. Naruto is too much even for rich people imo.
And you're saying it's expensive in US, I have to buy overseas from US which makes it x10.
So I should cut my internet access and live a life without watching/reading anything.MY GOD.
