I can't believe I'm saying this YET AGAIN, and I don't want to get involved in anymore drama about this, but piracy != theft.

Theft removes the original.

Piracy makes a copy.

Theft would be me going into Barnes and Noble and grabbing the book off the shelf, stuffing it in my pants, and running out of the store. Scanlations/piracy in general would be like if I went into the store, took a copy machine with me, and Xeroxed the book, then put it back on the shelf. I didn't remove the original book.

You lot can fight until the cows come home about whether or not that's morally correct, but it is no way, shape, or form the same thing as theft.

I have been hearing people say what this secret says for literally almost 15 years, and yet I have never actually heard a scanlation-reader attempt to excuse themselves by saying that manga was too expensive. I mean maybe they feel that way internally, but I've never actually heard it used aloud.

Do you mean buy the manga in ALL cases? Because I've read scanlations of Strawberry Shake Sweet, but I've never bought the manga, because it hasn't been (and never will be) published in English. Sure, I'd jump at the chance to buy a translated copy, but I don't really see the point in buying a Japanese copy when a) it's expensive and b) I can't even read it.

I'd love to be able to purchase digital, legal manga translated into English, presumably at a lower cost than what the physical copies go for. Even if I could regularly afford $10 for a book I'd finish in under an hour, I don't have the physical shelf space.

Honestly, the only reason I go to the bookstore to read manga is because I hate reading comics on a computer. But seriously, fuck no. I'm not going to spend $10 on something that takes me twenty minutes to read.

wait, i thought there were only scanlations of unlicensed manga? as in you can't buy it. anyway, i sort of look at scanlations the same way i do borrowing books from libraries. i'm previewing. i'm not paying for some crap i don't want. i own a lot of manga i read originally as scanlations because i wanted to own them to be able to read them again.

Now, I realize that my tastes are obscure enough that if I'm lucky enough to have a series translated and localized I will buy the hell out of it. But chances are it's not going to be, so I don't even bother looking for it.

Or, in the case of series I really loved, the title gets dropped three to four volumes in while it's still running.

I support the industry. I may not buy every single title I've ever glanced at, but I buy a fair amount of manga every year. What I'm waiting for is a good digital solution, because the main reason I slow in purchasing it is lack of physical space to store it. We're starting to get that with anime (we've got a ways to go but it's definitely in a better place than it was even two or three years ago), but manga still has a long road ahead of it.

In conclusion, I read scanlations, I don't often buy the physical copies any long; please, judge away, asshole.

Meh. I don't read manga, but I have a lot of friends that do and I don't honestly know that any of them try to justify their 'stealing' with "it's so expensive!" Most often, people read scanlations because it is literally impossible for them to get the manga in an English translation anywhere that doesn't involve 'stealing' it.

My thoughts on piracy: I do it. I know a lot of you do it. We all know it's wrong. I certainly feel guilty about it (and you should too) and if I pirate something then I usually eventually buy it. As a vice though, I don't think it's something extremely bad. I watched season 2 of Sherlock six months before it aired in my country. Eventually I bought it. I don't think that makes me (or you if you pirate something, even if you don't buy it) equivalent to a carjacker.

Finally, OP, I really don't think you need to be the manga police. It's really none of your business what people do or don't do with their money or how they view their choices in life. Judge all you want, but you're not really doing anything by just anonymously whining about it on f!S.

Artist with enough indie-comic-type friends here, so yeah, this one hits close to the bone, although people can say "manga is different." Somehow. And I can understand if it's a case of the manga simply not being available in English.

Making a comic is hard, artists don't get paid much, and series, especially smaller and independent ones, live or die by sales numbers. You are not entitled to free entertainment. You can get it, fine. Hell, you can get it legally at your local library, or you and your friends can buddy up and share books or whatever, and that's still legal. You can even do it illegally if you want. But honestly, getting defensive because people remind you that yeah, you're enjoying someone else's hard work without paying them for it? Sorry, that's exactly what you're doing. Own up to it if you want to keep doing it, but don't get offended when people call you out on it.

What if I prefer the translations on the scanlations to the official English crap? It tends to remove the culture jokes, in my experience.

I'd buy everything I download. It's not about the money (in my case), it's about the things I like (mostly books and comics) not being available in country because my government sucks and has blocked books imports. So, excuse me for not caring about your judgement, OP.

I agree with you, OP, re: people who spend day and night reading scanlated manga and then say things like, "I can't believe they're not making XYZ anymore!" "I can't afford it!" "I'm so mad because _____!"

Manga is expensive. When I was working a great job, I bought a lot of it. I bought entire series'-- and I loved them.

I got into Rose of Versailles via English subs and a rec from a friend. I loved it so much I bought the music CD, I downloaded the subbed anime, and I bought not only the French version of the anime, but also the French manga. (Note: I am not from France or Canada, I do not speak French fluently.)

I was so desperate to see more of it, to read more, to get my grubby paws on it, that I bought it in a language I could barely read. (Believe me, I could read it pretty well by the time I finished.)

That said, I've read Ouran's manga...but haven't bought it yet. I'm INSANELY picky about my manga. I buy the (SOB!!!) one volume of Kaze Hikaru that comes out A YEAR, and I DO own all of my absolute favorites. I have a few series on my to-read list--Victorian Romance Emma (I own the anime) and Ouran of course.

I see nothing wrong with reading scans now and then. It's a great way to try out a series to see if you'll like it, and a great way to read manga that you'd never be able to read otherwise. (I've translated scenes from La Rose de Versailles for people. It is NOT officially in English...but it's official in EVERY OTHER LANGUAGE-- including Arabic!)

However, I can't stand the thought of stealing (or piracy, both are taking things you're not entitled to have no matter how you argue it), and so any manga that I start via scans I end up buying as soon as I can afford it.

I'm just so insanely picky about anime/manga since there's so much garbage out there, that I rarely read scans these days anyway.
