What if I prefer the translations on the scanlations to the official English crap? It tends to remove the culture jokes, in my experience.

That's my only issue. But that's not what the OP is arguing either. If you're not buying the manga because the English translation is crap, then you're doing it for that reason, not because it's 'too expensive' (which most manga nowadays that I've seen is little more expensive than the original tank, which is crazy when you take into account all the extra work that has to go into its release).

If I like a series enough but want English translations from scanlators and not the official licensee, I'll buy the Japanese manga, keep the scanlations, and tell the licensee why I'm not buying from them.
