(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 02:48 am (UTC)(link)Why not, IF IT'S NOT HURTING ANYONE? It's not depriving anyone if you CAN'T FUCKING AFFORD TO PAY FOR IT IN THE FIRST PLACE. Therefore, where is the moral wrong? Where?
On my budget I can choose between medications and treatments to make my shitty life better, or entertainment to make my shitty life better. Guess which I choose, when I can get entertainment for almost nothing? I refuse to believe I'm a baaaaad person for trying to make my life better, but I guess it goes along with the type of thinking that frowns upon my relationship that makes my shitty life better because that person has a moral problem with their gender. Me making my life happier without hurting anyone is somehow MORALLY BAD.
So entertainment is a hobby, is it? Let's see, I'm unable to and can't afford to go camping anyway. Going for a walk round the block is painful. The library has a shitty selection of mainstream books that don't cater to my needs anyway, and it's quite hard to get there without a car, let alone return the books on time. Gee, I guess that leaves me with entertainment in my home. What shall I do without money in my home? Gee I wonder! I have just enough for an old laptop and an internet connection! I'm ripping off the original creators reading fanfic too, I'm sure.
Oh, am I an exception to your judgement?? Except for people like you, the poor are divided into deserving and undeserving, like we have to morally justify why we have so little money and what we do to survive in ways you take for granted.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 03:18 am (UTC)(link)And yeah, you're hurting the artists who work on these little entertainments. Maybe not directly depending on what books you're reading, but it's your mentally that hurts artists.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 03:31 am (UTC)(link)I wish I had the social power to directly affect someone just through having that mentality. Imagine all the social change I could effect!
One day I hope I recover, but for now, it's a regular small payment stretching out over my entire life. Fucking terrifying. If I do recover & get some earning power, you betcha I'll support small artists. The big ones? Hollywood? Yeah, not so much unless I get super-privileged and earn heaps of money. For now, self-care is my activism, and fuck knows it took me long enough to recognise this.

anyway people make their royalties through different ways depending on what they produce. most bands make most of their income through tours, not record sales. manga & international biz i'm not so sure, but i'm assuming that the artists get paid by the licensing company, in which case getting licensed would be the goal as opposed to selling a lot of copies, right? either way, word of mouth has weight.
i apologize for the length of this as i am drunk. anyway the point i was trying to make is that the mentality itself isn't really hurtful. piracy, though illegal, helps shit to circulate and gets people interested, so even if it's being pirated by some people the popularity of it can still generate income.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 07:36 am (UTC)(link)I sure let people know about what I'm enjoying, and what I think is quality, and there's the thought that if they have more money than me, they might want to pay for it. I will never care if someone pirates a camcopy of the Avengers though...

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 07:38 am (UTC)(link)Oh, you don't. That's because you're a fucking moron, on a retarded high horse with dwarfism.
