And I have no problem with you because you aren't trying to justify it. It's specifically people who tell me that they can't afford it that make me boil because shit, just admit what you're doing isn't right. Don't feed me garbage about how you only read scans because you can't afford the manga. I don't believe you'd buy it even if you could. ("You" being the person who's trying to justify it, not you insanenoodlyguy.)

That's not what you said at all tho. Just sayin', you specifically complained that people who pirate steal should find shit they can afford.

you specifically complained that people...should find shit they can afford.

Am I the only one who felt that smacked of...well...asshattery? It rubbed me wrong when I first read the secret tbh

No, I absolutely agree. There's one thing to be against piracy, but to be specifically angry at people who pirate because they can't afford stuff otherwise (or "claim to", but really, is that the OPs call to make?), that's... special.

I almost want to say it's classist. And that isn't an accusation I make a lot. Or ever, really.

But it's so blatant. It's like "you can't afford this, so fuck you."

and that's the real key isn't it? People are trying to make this a semantics fight, but the point is, that is some inappropriate shit.

I found as my monetary situation improved (and the advent of steam for games) I haven't done more then the occasional mp3 in the last few years.

Which doens't put me in some great tier here, I'm not trying to argue by degrees, I just try not to be a hypocrite about it.

I think you don't give a lot of us who pirate a lot of credit. I have some movies downloaded that I would LOOOOOOOOOVE to have physical, legit copies of. But I'm flat broke. So I downloaded them to watch in my down time. They happen to be shit quality. But, once I'm hired somewhere and can actually have some money to spare? I'm buying that shit. Especially since some of it isn't on my boyfriend's netflix.

Agreed completely. Now that I have a steady income, I'm slowly starting to replace my copies with actual boxsets, and it's glorious.

da

I pirate games all the time. Why? Because demo rarely exist and I'm incredably sick of buying a game, getting 2 hours into it, it's SHIT, but I cannot return it because I only play PC and nearly all PC games have an online aspect or potential DLC - classifying it as an online game so I CAN'T RETURN IT. Even if the sign up and DLC is untouched.

So now, when I see a new game out? I pirate that shit, decide if it's enjoyable, THEN go buy it.

Not ranting at you, just a general rant at my frustration for a way to try games before buying.

Lets say Diablo 3 made a good move throwing out a demo. Because I played it, enjoyed it, then bought the game.
Fable 3 on the otherhand is a waste of space.

Question, not attacking: Can't PC games be rented like console games, like, for a few days, or so? I haven't bought/rented videogames in forever, and I don't really play PC games, so this intrigues me.

Yep. I have friends who do that themselves. I also have a lot of friends who pirate games for emulators because the originals are either too fucking expensive to get off Amazon/Ebay because they're out of print and in low quantities, for they just can't find them these days period. You know, games for the NES or SNES, Famicom, etc.

Downloading and using the emulators are the only they can enjoy those old games today if they no longer have the system and physical games.

Or it's not the lack of money, but, you know, the lack of legit stuff you could buy. Say, I'd love to buy some books printed a couple of decades ago or books printed in small quantities. However, I cannot do so because they are not sold anymore. When you don't have permanent access to a large library, piracy might very well be the only way out.

I feel you on the book thing. I pirated the PDFs for every single Animorph book:Megamorphs, the series, the spoof, and the Alternamorphs.

Because, the books in their original state, are no longer printed.

However, I do go to second hand shops looking high and low for the books, so I can have them all on hand. But the publisher is still not getting that money.

Once I get all the books, I will probably start buying the rerelease. In hopes that one day, whatever kid or kids I may have, can read the series and not be constantly asking me who Xena is or some such like that.

Not that that's a bad thing and I'd happily explain, but the original books, by today's pop culture standards, are hideously outdated.

There's also a difference between 'can't afford' and 'don't choose to'. In a day and age where a basic tv plan (particularly if it comes with on demand) and internet connection can keep you occupied for many, many hours more free time than you actually have, even if you stuck to perfectly legal offerings, it's not always easy to justify making the 'entertainment' slice of your budget pie any bigger than it already is.

Maybe it is hypocritical, letting others support the creators financially so they can continue to produce content for you to enjoy - kind of like the activists whose un-vaccinated kids still take advantage of herd immunity - but is it truly, unequivocally worse than not being a fan at all?
