Now, I don't mean "no one should ever use scanlations ever" by this. Some people would say that you should import Japanese copies of manga you read scanlated if it doesn't have an English language release, and I agree that it's a good idea, but just reading scans for unlicensed titles is okay IMO. Using scans to preview titles is valid. I think it's understandable in cases of insanely long running titles as well. Lots of reasons are fairly justifiable so long as you actually buy something.
What pisses me off about the "I can't afford it!" argument is that it implies that an artist's hard work is actually worthless. What you're saying is "I can't justify actually paying money for this story, it isn't actually worth money in my head, so I will steal it." That....is kind of gross.
