wait, i thought there were only scanlations of unlicensed manga? as in you can't buy it. anyway, i sort of look at scanlations the same way i do borrowing books from libraries. i'm previewing. i'm not paying for some crap i don't want. i own a lot of manga i read originally as scanlations because i wanted to own them to be able to read them again.

how is me getting manga from the library any different from reading it online?

Because the library purchased the book. Because books purchased by libraries generally register in a different way with publishing companies, thus allowing them to take circulation into account when assessing a book's popularity and whether or not to continue publishing that book. And because, yes, library books fall apart after enough use and need to be replaced, meaning they will once again purchase that book.

And if your library has manga and comics you can get legitimately (and many do now), then you really have no excuse. Hell, did you know that even if your library doesn't have the items you want, you can still go and request them, and they will either purchase them or get them on loan from another library (Inter-Library Loan). Trufax.

There is that too. It's the excuses that bug me more. I went through a brief period of downloading comics. Specifically, Doctor Who. I think maybe three issues, using the excuse, "I'm too poor, I'm in college, and I don't know if I like it that much."

Three issues in, I decided if I didn't like it enough to pay money for it, I didn't need to read it.

I will say I miss the old Scans_Daily LJ (I know they're on DW now, just don't go there as much), but that was less of "let's download the whole comic" and more of a place to find great jumping-on issues and characters for buying more comics.

And yeah, Scans_daily really did have that "like it? buy it!" culture. I miss them.

I can place the blame for my insanely expensive (well, for me) comic habit and collection squarely on S_D's shoulders. Before them, I picked up maybe two comics a month. Now...well, there's a couple-or-four longboxes sitting around right now, and a few shelves and... siiiigh. It's an addiction.

Eh, then yeah, I'll go for the gray area then. That's one of those things where I can legitimately understand the "I'd buy it if it were available" argument. Back in the day, my friends and I bought boatloads of Japanese-language manga, but hell, not everyone can teach themselves a whole freaking other language just to read their magical girl book (I know I couldn't).

It would be nice to also think, though that you would buy it legitimate when/if it came out, again, if only to show the publisher that there was enough interest in the series that it was worth their while to continue translating it.

Did you deliberately misread that sentence?

Let me quote the sentence for you.

IF your library has manga, acknowledging that not all libraries do.

(and many now do), acknowledging that MANY but not ALL libraries do.

Stop looking for ways to be insulted and actually read the bloody words.

Yeah, this. I don't see it as any different from checking it out of the library to read it. I figure most people buy what they really like eventualy, or buy swag related to it.

What if you don't check the book out? Would sitting on a library couch for two hours until you finish the book, then putting it back on the shelf, then become an act of piracy?

Legally, yes, this would be okay while reading a torrented copy would not. But the majority of this discussion doesn't seem to be about legality; it's about how to reconcile your finances with the authors' livlihoods.

And both of these methods are the same in that they put not one cent in the authors' pockets, and give no benefit except increasing the existant amount of fannish love for the authors' works. (And yes, this can - not always does, maybe not evenly commonly does, but undeniably *can* - lead to a financial benefit down the road.)

Reading a library book - be it in the library or outside the library - results in wear and tear. When the book needs to be replaced the library cannot download another copy from the net. The library will have to buy another copy to continue letting their readers preview the author's work unless they received the replacement as a donation. And when the replacement wears out, the library will have to find a replacement for the replacement. And again. And again.

Libraries give authors more financial benefits down the road.
