(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 09:51 am (UTC)(link)The reason I prefer scans to paying is not because it's too expensive. To be honest money is not a problem as far as buying manga goes. On amazon I could buy one volume for anywhere between $5-$10 which is pretty fair. However, I like the idea of scans because they let me get a feel for the story. No point in buying all the volumes if I only enjoyed one or two arcs and the rest of it is a let down that I will never pick up again. I don't want to spend money on something that will ultimately be a disappointment if it is possible to avoid it. Reading the series online beforehand lets me know if it's worth it. The same way watching game playthroughs on youtube or AMV's make me want to buy the game/song. Even though uploading copyrighted stuff is illegal, it still introduces me to something I might not have known about otherwise and sometimes encourages me to buy it because I'll know if I like it or not.
There is one manga I really like right now, it is not going to be a long-running series but it is still ongoing and it will probably end after another 3-4 volumes. I read all the chapters online, loved them, and now I'm seriously thinking about purchasing it just to have it. Literally the only thing holding me back is that the author seems like a troll who likes to mock the fans and that the ending will reflect that (I never understood why some authors are that way to their fans but w/e). That is why I am waiting for the whole thing to end before I decide whether I buy it or not. I don't buy only part of a story, I will either get all or nothing.
It is so rare for me to like a manga enough to buy it. It usually always end in disappointment or turns boring. Yeah I know that sounds spoiled but as long as the option of reading scans is before me I'm going to use it.
As I said money is not the problem, I just want to make sure it's money well spent. Songs on iTunes cost $1.29 (ripoff) I sill purchase them even though I could easily download them because I know I like the song and will listen to it again. I don't mind buying something, I just want it to be a good purchase with longevity. Mont manga I read either haven't ended yet or became really boring.
