Not totally relevant, but I used to work for Barnes and Noble, and I much prefer the people who download manga illegally over the internet to the folks who come in, clutter the manga aisle and make booksellers weave around them or trip over them, leave piles of books in random corners, get them all dirty, never buy them anyway, leave them unsellable in the process, and just in general make a disaster of things. I don't even care, I wished we didn't stock them then and I pity the poor bastards who have to deal with them now.

Doesn't Barnes and Noble have a strict "so sitting in the aisle reading manga" policy now, or is it just my store? That really seemed to cut down on people coming in and reading whole series in-store.

And as I recall Borders started packaging all their manga in plastic to keep it from happening before they went under...

They didn't package all their manga that way, and something being in a package doesn't always stop people from opening it. When I worked and Bed, Bath, and Beyond it was actually so bad that the managers actually told us to go over and literally take the next package away from them, tell them 'Let me help you with this Sir/Mame' and rip it open for them to try to *embarrass* them out of the behavior. [For the record, this was because we had several clients would ignore us when we asked them to stop and open every. Single. Package of whatever item they were interested in [like all of x color of sheet, that kind of thing]]

FUCKING THIS. I am not a violent person, but I wanted to throttle those kids who would come in, rip off the shrinkwrap on the 18+ manga, shove it in the back of the shelf with their straw wrappers, and then stuff the books themselves in the sci-fi section covered in cookie crumbs and caramel drizzle. More so because a lot of them were not even kids. I will take piracy any day.

It's ALWAYS people who read manga who do this, too. In B&Ns that I've been in all over the country, it's the same. You never see that shit in any other aisle.

Oh, wow, I didn't know people were that awful. I used to try to be so careful not to crease the spine or leave any marks on manga I was reading in the store, and put them back where I found them. I haaaaaate people who can't seem to go near a piece of paper without fucking it up.

Also how the hell would you even try to read in the manga aisle without dozens of kids dodging around you to get to the shelves? Who'd be stupid enough to fight that battle?
