I am willing to pay for manga.

I am not willing to play assloads for shipping+handling from Japan which does not at all go into the mangaka's pocket.

And if you can't read Japanese and there are no translations, WTF do you do? Learn Japanese for the sake of reading manga?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what some people do. Morally, it's better than reading illegal copies.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
...yes? How do you think scanlations get made in the first place?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
im p sure there are people who speak both japanese and english for reasons other than translating manga

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Lies! Anyone who speaks more than one language does so purely for fandom purposes!

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Heaven forbid you put some effort into enjoying your hobby.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
... You think learning an entirely new language is a reasonable effort just to pursue a simple hobby?

I mean, I assume the reasons scanslators do that is because learning the language and translation is their hobby...

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
especially a language like japanese. i've studied japanese for years and it is one of the hardest languages to learn if your native language is english. learning french or something is not that unreasonable to pursue a hobby if you're really, really dedicated to that hobby, but japanese?

...I actually did that. Manga was actually one of my main motivations for learning Japanese. To be specific, I refuse to pay for bad Americanized translations and found the level of English in scanlation groups lacking at times. So I decided to learn to read it in Japanese instead.

You gotta be kidding.

I was a manga fan before there were translations so I did buy some manga in Japanese once I got a job, and tried to learn Japanese by myself to decipher it. At my best after a few years, I could only get a very vague understanding of what they were about, and the lamest conversation bits.

Also to be honest, now that translations are more widespread, I can tell that not many mangas are worth the effort of learning an entirely different language for it, unless that is part of what you enjoy about it.

Manga is fun but like everything, and maybe more than everything since it's so formulaic and admittedly a market based industry, not an art, 90% of it is shit.
