How long has fandom been about negativity and hate? Since fandom was invented. Whining, fannish entitlement, flamewars, it's all been there from the start, albeit in different forms. Still, it's not a recent development. Sure, how much negativity you see largely depends on which fandoms and sites you hang out in, but it's not like you can't also find squee and positivity if you look for it.

Yeah, if journalfen weren't down right now I was going to post the wonderful vintage onanism where two different group of fans took potshots at each other-- at the first WorldCon.
