idk what fandoms you're in, but I would quit them if they were like that. My fandoms are sunshine and rainbows and I just ignore the negative parts.

SPN fandom, right?

Okay, I know, SPN is not a decade old, but you also didn't say your first fandom was the only one. ;-)

You should hang out with #2. Then you can both complain about how negative fandom is and how it's ruined your easy fun.

Also, you're complaining about people in fandom complaining about fandom--how are you better, exactly?

To be fair, fandoms (especially big ones) always have hate. I still remember the Gundam Wing days... It's not new.

How long has fandom been about negativity and hate? Since fandom was invented. Whining, fannish entitlement, flamewars, it's all been there from the start, albeit in different forms. Still, it's not a recent development. Sure, how much negativity you see largely depends on which fandoms and sites you hang out in, but it's not like you can't also find squee and positivity if you look for it.

It's fine to complain sometimes. It's perfectly normal to have issues with things that you like or love, and to want to discuss those issues. Some people act like if you enjoy a piece of media you should never say anything negative about it. That's dumb.

Now if what you say is true and ALL you see is hate, then I say you're looking in the wrong place or need different friends.

But from past experience I know sometimes you don't truly want to quit on something even if isn't the same thing you used to love. Sometimes you hope that it might get better and you'll be around to see it. In those cases it's probably best not to be involved in the fandom side of things too much, but people will express their opinions, both positive and negative, and that's never going to change.

Oh, OP, this is not a new thing. One of my fandoms has been hating on canon since before I was born. I'm sorry it's taken over your fandoms in a way that you dislike, though.

...yeah it's definitely not new. I think it depends on where in fandom you hang out, really.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not the hate in fandom that gets me, it's the people who complain about the hate all the time, like they can't just avoid it and move on.

Man, I totally get where you're coming from. The complainers always sound so whiny. I have to wonder why they keep watching a show when all they do is bitch about it.

I personally have been ruining fandom for you by spewing my negativity online since 2002.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Right now my fandom is basically nothing but hateons and negativiity. And if you aren't part of the collective hive mind, they tear you apart like rabid, irrational dogs.

It's pathetic, really. I think the worst part is, is that these people think it makes them 'special' or it gives them 'intellectual cookies' for being mouth foamers and irrational douchebags.

Sincere questions there.

Uh, don't go to LJ comms then? There's lots of fandom websites; just don't visit negative ones. Try out comms on dreamwidth or make some friends on tumblr or something and read fic on AO3 or ff.net or dreamwidth if you don't like livejournal. I'm sure you'll find somewhere without complainers.

Two completely different reasons:

1. entitlement

2. social justice

I think we just have rosy-colored glasses when we look at the past. For example, my first fandom experience FELT like nothing but sunshine and rainbows and it seemed like everyone was nice to each other, and they were, in that small segment of the forum. Everywhere else, everyone else despised that small group of happy-go-lucky shippers(or so it seemed when I caught peripherals from venturing forth). Maybe, if you were lucky, you had a small fandom or a small group of people that you considered the fandom, but more likely than not, wank was occurring somewhere. That's just the facts of fandom.

HOWEVER. I do feel like I see more wank, in general, in all and every fandom, than I did back then. But, then again, I have fingers in a lot more pies these days, so I'm more aware of stuff. Maybe you're the same way?

I hear you, OP. I've noticed that a LOT in Once Upon a Time fandom; on a certain comm, every thread is people being upset 'Oh, the show's gone to shit' and whatnot.

I just don't go to that comm, and try to ignore the negativity.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, what? I think this was significantly longer than 10 years ago you're talking about.

I've been in fandom since 1997, and I don't know anyone who sent their fics as text files. They were pretty much all archived on the internet, either on Geocities or their own sites. And realplayer videos? Has anyone actually done that after 1996!?

10 years ago for me was LOTR fandom, which was really weird, and kind of catty. Mostly among the old fans and the newbies. And don't even get me started on the Harry/whoever ships from HP.

Um, fandom is always had it's negative parts...and if the fandom source if active right now, as opposed to ending a few years ago - you're more likely to witness negative things as they happen i.e. poor plot, character dislike, shipping wars

None of this is new.

[personal profile] celestialchild 2012-07-17 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
There are some things I get, such as hating on such-and-such character because he/she is coming between your OTP. Or people just trolling in fandom communities. But honestly, the vast majority (at least insofar as concerns Tumblr fandoms) of "negativity" I see is actually constructive and legitimate criticism.

Why is it such a bad thing to discuss the direction and writing of a show, and to express when you are dissatisfied and why? When you think the show is less enjoyable because it killed this character or that, or only focuses on these people, or pursues this storyline, etc.? Especially when these many forms of media (books, tv, movies, games, etc) are made for audiences. I am inclined to think that in general, if your fandom is full of frequently displeased individuals, the show(etc) is probably doing something wrong.

Also, a lot of "WHY SO MUCH HATE CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG" comments usually pop up whenever someone launches into an analysis of race/ethnicity, sexuality, gender, disability, etc. These are serious issues that matter very much to many fans, but other fans get upset because they don't think these types of comments should be a part of fandom space. They want people to "stop making an issue of it", when the truth is that there will be an issue whether people discuss it or not; the discussion itself is meant to tackle the issue, make people aware, and hopefully improve the situation. Saying these kinds of topics should not belong in fandom is often symptomatic of privilege.

Time and again I fail to understand why fandom must be sunshine and rainbows for people;* why some people believe you can only talk about the things you like, or mostly the things you like, and nothing else. That just seems silly. It is possible to be a fan of something but have things you dislike about it as well. I love my parents to death but goddam if they don't drive me up a wall and through the roof sometimes.

I have felt, personally, that engaging in fandom by also talking about the things you believe need improvement can say a lot about you as fan. You see the potential for what you are watching, and you want it to do well. When you feel it could do better, you express how you would like to see things and why. In the day and age of the internet, especially, the power of constructive criticism is great; it means that your messages have a greater chance of circulating among other fans for discussion and making it back to the producers/writers/etc. Even if it doesn't, sticking around for something even when you are displeased with certain aspects is often a sign that the show(etc) still has much to offer.

Yes, there are certainly people who stick around just to hate, but I have personally found them few and far between in most fandoms. Honestly, every fandom I can think of is still made up of mostly people talking about what they like. And so, when people start discussing what they don't like, suddenly everyone thinks the fandom has gone to shit because not everyone is singing praises.

*If your fandom IS all sunshine and rainbows (hello GLTAS) hats off to you.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, the only way you will *ever* be in a fandom that isn't full of wank/criticism-of-canon is if you just keep moving on to fandoms that are only one or two seasons old. Basically, the older a fandom gets, the more bitter all the fans get. Things that didn't go the way fandom wanted them to go kind of accumulate, and eventually the fandom can't let anything go anymore.

You're only other option is getting into a tiny fandom (I'm talking <50 fans in the whole fandom, here), because sometimes with the right mix of people tiny fandoms can maintain a positive atmosphere better than big fandoms can. But then you'll have no fic to read.

TBQH, your best option if generally to join a big fandom and then carve yourself out a small corner with like-minded fans. That won't necessarily work, because individual fans can change over time, just like the fandom as a whole can change over time, but you can just drop or pick up people on your flist to keep your corner of fandom how you want it.

But yeah, it's not fandom overall that's getting more negative. It's that all specific fandoms get more negative over time. Apparently during season one everyone loved SPN fandom because it was so wank free. *shrug*

(You mentioned that you watch Korra, and you might argue that that fandom is 'young' given that there's only been one season so far, but the fact it's a spinoff means that all the negativity from ATLA fandom is carried over.)
