Why is it such a bad thing to discuss the direction and writing of a show, and to express when you are dissatisfied and why? When you think the show is less enjoyable because it killed this character or that, or only focuses on these people, or pursues this storyline, etc.? Especially when these many forms of media (books, tv, movies, games, etc) are made for audiences. I am inclined to think that in general, if your fandom is full of frequently displeased individuals, the show(etc) is probably doing something wrong.
Also, a lot of "WHY SO MUCH HATE CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG" comments usually pop up whenever someone launches into an analysis of race/ethnicity, sexuality, gender, disability, etc. These are serious issues that matter very much to many fans, but other fans get upset because they don't think these types of comments should be a part of fandom space. They want people to "stop making an issue of it", when the truth is that there will be an issue whether people discuss it or not; the discussion itself is meant to tackle the issue, make people aware, and hopefully improve the situation. Saying these kinds of topics should not belong in fandom is often symptomatic of privilege.
Time and again I fail to understand why fandom must be sunshine and rainbows for people;* why some people believe you can only talk about the things you like, or mostly the things you like, and nothing else. That just seems silly. It is possible to be a fan of something but have things you dislike about it as well. I love my parents to death but goddam if they don't drive me up a wall and through the roof sometimes.
I have felt, personally, that engaging in fandom by also talking about the things you believe need improvement can say a lot about you as fan. You see the potential for what you are watching, and you want it to do well. When you feel it could do better, you express how you would like to see things and why. In the day and age of the internet, especially, the power of constructive criticism is great; it means that your messages have a greater chance of circulating among other fans for discussion and making it back to the producers/writers/etc. Even if it doesn't, sticking around for something even when you are displeased with certain aspects is often a sign that the show(etc) still has much to offer.
Yes, there are certainly people who stick around just to hate, but I have personally found them few and far between in most fandoms. Honestly, every fandom I can think of is still made up of mostly people talking about what they like. And so, when people start discussing what they don't like, suddenly everyone thinks the fandom has gone to shit because not everyone is singing praises.
*If your fandom IS all sunshine and rainbows (hello GLTAS) hats off to you.
