I think we just have rosy-colored glasses when we look at the past. For example, my first fandom experience FELT like nothing but sunshine and rainbows and it seemed like everyone was nice to each other, and they were, in that small segment of the forum. Everywhere else, everyone else despised that small group of happy-go-lucky shippers(or so it seemed when I caught peripherals from venturing forth). Maybe, if you were lucky, you had a small fandom or a small group of people that you considered the fandom, but more likely than not, wank was occurring somewhere. That's just the facts of fandom.

HOWEVER. I do feel like I see more wank, in general, in all and every fandom, than I did back then. But, then again, I have fingers in a lot more pies these days, so I'm more aware of stuff. Maybe you're the same way?
