Eh. Slytherin gets a bad rap. It being the "villain house" was the result of overly simplistic writing rather than the traits of ambition and cunning.

I personally felt it was the "villain house" because of the pureblood thing, which transformed it over the centuries into the "no mudbloods allowed" clubhouse for the prejudiced privileged elites, who already had a tendency to have neutral Slytherin traits like ambition and stuff, and therefore socialized all wizard kids with Slytherin traits into prejudiced snobs like their parents.

Which was a bad thing, because honestly, the side of good could have really used some Slytherins. I found the trio's extreme Gryffindor-ish-ness adorable, but they would have been so much more successful and less "oh you poor stupid darlings" if they'd had a couple of non-dickhole Slytherin allies to help them out.
