It sucks being scared to express yourself because of stuff like that, but those other people also have the right to express themselves and contructively criticize your work. I'm probably more of the SJW persuasion than most here at fandomsecrets, but I draw the line at outright attacking people over stuff like this. Discussion>attacks when the offense was obviously unintentional. I mean, it depends on the offense (if you're a teenage boy on tumblr who thinks "trayvonning" is cute, lol I will go SJW on you like you wouldn't believe; or if you're arguing with a trans woman and repeadedly calling her a man and addressing her with male pronouns on purpose because your brand of feminist ideology doesn't believe in trans people, yeah, you're asking for a SJW attack), but for something like this, yeah, people should be critiquing, not attacking.

The thing is, concrit isn't always right. For example, if someone says your female character is portrayed misogynistically, you are allowed to debate with them and say "actually, I think this representation is hella empowering and here is why". You're allowed to defend yourself (as long as you're not rude and snotty, and you actually listen to their criticism and try to see it from their point of view), they're allowed to retaliate, and tbh, I think thinking about stuff like representation and shit should be an active part of crafting a story (this happens a lot when I'm writing, I'll come up with a trope that I think is kind of cliche and I'll play with it and often that results in me purposely writing, say, female characters that break gender stereotypes or typical tropes not because it's "PC", but because I think it makes the story more interesting). Basically, it should be an ongoing discussion, not a tiptoed-around issue.

But there's nothing wrong with being nervous about criticism.
