For example, if someone says your female character is portrayed misogynistically, you are allowed to debate with them and say "actually, I think this representation is hella empowering and here is why". You're allowed to defend yourself (as long as you're not rude and snotty, and you actually listen to their criticism and try to see it from their point of view), they're allowed to retaliate, and tbh, I think thinking about stuff like representation and shit should be an active part of crafting a story (this happens a lot when I'm writing, I'll come up with a trope that I think is kind of cliche and I'll play with it and often that results in me purposely writing, say, female characters that break gender stereotypes or typical tropes not because it's "PC", but because I think it makes the story more interesting). Basically, it should be an ongoing discussion, not a tiptoed-around issue.
But there's nothing wrong with being nervous about criticism.
