You are weak. That's not our fault.

Here, I'll help you.

Your fic is shit and you are a piece of shit for ever thinking it up. Do the rest of us a favor and sever your connect to the internet forever, pukestain. Then kill yourself.

x 1000, in slightly different forms and occasional shit grammar, bad spelling, and some memes!

There. That's your nightmare scenario? It just fucking happened. Now post something you fucking pansy. Or CRY SOME MOAR.

I totally understand where you're coming from, anon. I've seen people get hounded out of fandom for the stupidest reasons- once I saw someone get dogpiled because they wrote a fictional fight between a fictional married couple where the couple cheated on each other, and the guy called the girl a "cheating whore." Never mind that the guy was obviously a hypocrite and you weren't supposed to sympathise with him, no, obviously that reflected the author's REAL VIEWS TOWARDS WOMEN, and not her just writing a douchebag as a douchebag.

It makes me kind of paranoid too, but I still write and post my fic anyway. Fuck the haters because they're gonna hate anyway is my philosophy. If you want to point out legitimate problems with my work, fine, go ahead, I'll take your advice under consideration, but if you're just going to whine and scream about me not writing your own personal views into my story or what the fuck ever, I'll just laugh at you. And maybe even purposefully make my next fic politically incorrect just to spite you. Because poking the fandom police is funny.

I don't write fanfic but to an extent I do understand where you're coming from. Sometimes just posting comments takes me a good while because I read over everything several times to see if they're ~okay~. I can't imagine how difficult writing fanfic must be. It's easy to mess up your wording and offend someone even if that's not your intention.

(i mean, just look at the comments you're getting.) i still read fic, though, and i love shit that's problematic and i never ever complain. and i'm sure i'm not the only one. we need you! maybe just stop reading reviews, period. there are a lot of people in the entertainment industry who choose to do that because it's too distracting.

K Hanna Korossy, is that you?

Either way, here's the deal: when you put stuff out for public consumption, the public will consume it. If they don't like it, they'll discuss it. Publicly. It'll happen. If you write a beloved and popular character in an OOC and unsympathetic way, chances are, you won't receive a lot of kudos for it. If you write a female character in a way that seems misogynistic or bashing, not only will you not receive kudos, but you'll deserve the criticism that comes your way.

Fandom isn't 100% positive. I love complementary reviews but I'd rather get critiqued and find out what doesn't work for people, especially if I have characterization issues, than have people ignore my stuff completely.

I'm sorry about your anxiety. :/ Maybe writing things just for yourself and not showing them to anyone might help you overcome it? It worked for me, and I ended up improving my writing immensely.

But, your secret comes across as very blame-y. I get that some people are overly negative and that trolling can get out of hand, but the fact is, some people like to analyze and criticize things. And that's a good thing. If it makes people pay attention to things like whether or not their stories perpetuate misogyny, then it means there will be less misogyny in stories. I really am sorry about your anxiety but you can't expect people to be unconditionally supportive of everyone else all the time.

haters going to hate

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
While I certainly understand why you feel this way, I can also tell you that if you let the haters win and run you out, you'll never be able to do anything in real life. Harsh? Yes. But the fact is you are going to find haters everywhere. Even the grocery store.

You have to be bigger than the bullies. You have to stand up to them. Or ignore them. Your stories are yours. Unless you are writing blatantly awful stories about taboo topics (although it's hard to imagine what would be taboo outside of pedophilia) you need to keep writing and ignore the haters. Block them. Delete the reviews if they are anonymous. If the reviews are sincere critiques of your writing, you can learn from them. Otherwise, hate-filled diatribes are on them, not you.

It sucks being scared to express yourself because of stuff like that, but those other people also have the right to express themselves and contructively criticize your work. I'm probably more of the SJW persuasion than most here at fandomsecrets, but I draw the line at outright attacking people over stuff like this. Discussion>attacks when the offense was obviously unintentional. I mean, it depends on the offense (if you're a teenage boy on tumblr who thinks "trayvonning" is cute, lol I will go SJW on you like you wouldn't believe; or if you're arguing with a trans woman and repeadedly calling her a man and addressing her with male pronouns on purpose because your brand of feminist ideology doesn't believe in trans people, yeah, you're asking for a SJW attack), but for something like this, yeah, people should be critiquing, not attacking.

The thing is, concrit isn't always right. For example, if someone says your female character is portrayed misogynistically, you are allowed to debate with them and say "actually, I think this representation is hella empowering and here is why". You're allowed to defend yourself (as long as you're not rude and snotty, and you actually listen to their criticism and try to see it from their point of view), they're allowed to retaliate, and tbh, I think thinking about stuff like representation and shit should be an active part of crafting a story (this happens a lot when I'm writing, I'll come up with a trope that I think is kind of cliche and I'll play with it and often that results in me purposely writing, say, female characters that break gender stereotypes or typical tropes not because it's "PC", but because I think it makes the story more interesting). Basically, it should be an ongoing discussion, not a tiptoed-around issue.

But there's nothing wrong with being nervous about criticism.

I echo everyone else - (plus I hate this generalized 'fandom' - I'm part of two fandoms primarily and we're all very happy. Oh sure, sometimes we bicker a little, but it generally stays positive, but we're also small, long-lived, and many of us are over the age of 21 ^^) - you can't let haters get you down.

Honestly, it's the internet. Who friggin' cares? I have a small list of people who I respect (online). I either ask them to beta my work or I look for their reviews - everyone else is a plus. I'll usually consider something if more than one person says something (like I had one story where at least four people thought the epilogue was too short. While I didn't re-write it, I did think about those critiques for future stories).

If they have an issue with the way you portray a female character, or a male character, or whatever, just ignore them. If they don't get a response, they usually go away because it's obvious that you don't care :P

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I can empathize with this on a more extreme SJW level. I've been writing fic again, and I know there are communities and tumblr groups that really find the words crazy, stupid, lame, and dumb more offensive than the crudest of swear words. And I almost started to agonize whether or not to have my characters use them, until I was like "Fuck it. These characters are not SJW. They use these words in canon, and if a shit storm happens so be it."

So far things have been cool, and it's been very tension relieving.

I can't really feel your problem too much (never been attacked by SJ warriors or anything for any 'fic I've written), I just went o_o over the "100 oneshots in a year" thing, because that was a New Years goal of mine the other year, and everyone thought I was insane, but I wrote like 139 fics that year or something and felt like a total badass.

I'm lucky if I'm posting 20 oneshots a year right now though. I just. I'll cry moar. :P

i understand where you are coming from, just as i support the increased awareness of these sort of issues.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
You have standards now, it's not a bad thing. Being aware and sensitive to stuff isn't bad. It makes you think before you write, which is also a good thing.

Just learn to separate what you find fun from what you know is "good" or "correct" or whatever. They don't have to be mutual. You can write fic with a rape or a a misogynistic scene, etc as long as you acknowledge (whether in or out of the fic or in an an) that you do not condone rape or misogyny or whatever.

And all the assholes above talking about how you should cry more, just let them fuck themselves. You can write what you want and enjoy what you want as long as you acknowledge the faults in what you might like.

Then don't share your work. Or lock it for whoever you want, whatever. Fandom isn't your positive feedback loop, just as it isn't actually my safe space from bullshit no matter how much I wish it to be.

If you write something problematic/ooc/etc., whether or not you think it's so, you either acknowledge it or truck along. I'm sorry there's tons of crit, legitimate and otherwise, that affect your ability to write and share your stories. The more you practice writing those sensitive themes, I assume, the better you are able to tackle them next time.

Seriously ridiculous to think that publicly shared work is not going to talked about in ways you didn't want though.

Seriously OP, fandom, and the massive amounts of just-plain-crazy that swirls withing and around it, are always going to be there. The solution to your problem is a simple one... *stop* caring what anyone else in fandom thinks. What matters is that you try to have some fun. That's what fandom is for, or at least, fun is what fandom SHOULD be for.
