I can empathize with this on a more extreme SJW level. I've been writing fic again, and I know there are communities and tumblr groups that really find the words crazy, stupid, lame, and dumb more offensive than the crudest of swear words. And I almost started to agonize whether or not to have my characters use them, until I was like "Fuck it. These characters are not SJW. They use these words in canon, and if a shit storm happens so be it."

So far things have been cool, and it's been very tension relieving.

Agreed. I want to love some of these SJW fandom blogs, but I side-eye them every time they want to scold anons/others for using so-called "ableist" terms. I really highly doubt those doing the scolding are in a position to determine what disabled people find offensive.

What would you say if they were disabled? Would you STFU then?

Judging from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fandom? No, they'd just say you're too sensitive/taking things too personally/privileged*/ruining any chance of positive disability portrayals**.

*I was told this because I didn't want to be represented by a stereotype.
**Prime example: that F!S submission a while ago waxing about "valuable lessons" taught by The Grey Pegasus.

I'm lolling at everyone in this thread who thinks this is a phenomenon that does not happen.

Like, it's not just individualized concrit anymore or justified "callings-out" (the latter of which which I am deciding is increasingly always bullshit when it comes to crappy fanfic written as a hobby). It's like Leiningen Versus the Ants out there, only the ants are dumbass armchair activists mad because you erased Kurt's identity by pairing him with Rachel or whatever.

All right, I know "crazy" is supposed to be ableist to people with mental illnesses, "lame" is supposed to be ableist to people who can't walk normally, and "dumb" is supposed to be ableist to people who are mute. What is god's name is wrong with "stupid"?

If words like stupid, idiot, dumb, and moron are ableist, then what are we supposed to call people who are the opposite of smart?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
I once read something about how 'smart'/'genius' are ableist because it emphasizes how some people aren't as gifted as others or something like that. Which is... bwuh?

There is nothing wrong with those words. It's all about context, but you know some of the overinvested SJW's don't really care about context, it's the simple use of the word that sets them off.

If you ask me the people who overreact are just trolling or so misguided that they are blind to their own actions and responses.

Everyone should watch the 30 Rock episode "Idiots are People Two," and just chill the fuck out.
