Re: Unnecessary Overthinking
(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 12:02 am (UTC)(link)Yes, and? You do realize that a well-written villain has motivations beyond just "evil," right? It's really frustrating that so much of fandom insists villains have to be two-dimensional, either as pure evil like you're suggesting or as poor, misunderstood woobies. No, dude. Let villains be complex. You know, like real human people actually are. Yeah, even the "evil" ones.

Which is why writing them is so damn much fun.
And tough to do. If a villain isn't tough to write, you're probably oversimplifying.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 12:21 am (UTC)(link)Yes, and that's one of the things that's fun to explore in fiction.
And, you know, there are many, many different conceptions of love among non-evil people, too. Like, I'm definitely not the world-conquering type, but the shit in romance novels and romcoms doesn't fall under my conception of "love" at all.
Re: Unnecessary Overthinking
Anon, you are awesome. This so damn much.
I love villains precisely because it's so fascinating to explore what concepts we take for granted that we understand (like honor, loyalty, love) are like for them.
