Movies you Want to See Made

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
What movies do you want to see based on your favorite book/tv show/comic/song/whatever? Have you already picked out the cast inside your head? What form do you think would be able to do it the greatest justice (hand drawn animation, CGI, live action, whatever)?

Because lately I've been thinking about how badly I want a Static Shock movie. You have no idea how much geeky joy I get out of trying to figure out the best cast. I'd really like to it be live action, but I also wouldn't say no to a tv-movie spinoff from the show. The only thing that makes me said is that Dwayne McDuffie wouldn't be here to work on it :(

I'd also like to see a live action movie based off the Gay Pirates song by Cosmo Jarvis. At first I thought about it jokingly, but now I'm seriously interested in it

I really want there to be a Wicked film, and I really want it to be 2D animated. I know there is supposedly a film coming, but it's live action and this makes me slightly sad.

I also really want there to be a Spring Awakening film. Like, really, really, really, really bad. I don't care about the medium and I don't care about the actors, I just need this film in my face asap.

I really want there to be a GOOD film version of Wuthering Heights, because all of the recent adaptations have sucked. I think there's one in the works right now, but I'm not holding out much hope for it to be any good.

I also really want Invisible Monsters to be a movie.

+1 to the Gay Pirates film, I would watch the hell out of that.

ikr? I loved that show so hard when I was younger. Even the preachy Very Special episodes

I want my Coen Bros adapted/directed Yiddish Policemen's Union movie. They bought the rights for it close to 3 years ago, and it's just such a perfect match I can't imagine it in the hands of a different team. I did a fan cast for it on my lj. It's one of my all time favorite books, and while I think adapting it would be pretty difficult- the long descriptive passages are among the top reasons I love it- it's topical and would make a great film.

+1 on the Gay pirates movie. Actually, I'd kill for any movie that has a gay character where their romance or sexuality is a big deal. Maybe a nice action movie that has gay MC who just happens to have a boy/girlfriend or something.

Other than that maybe a Deadpool movie.

Have you watched "I Love you Philip Morris"? You might like it, but I'm not sure.

You mean "isn't" a big deal, I think, but YES so much seconded on that.

Especially if it's some action-filled spy movie with a team of BAMFs, one of whom is just gay, No biggie. He has a boyfriend and they're totes sweet together, but his boyfriend gets pissed off when he finds out the guy is a spy but then forgives him in the end, and it has nothing to do with being gay but the romance is in the plot for a reason, not just shoved in for the sake of having a gay romance.

Or two of them are gay and a couple and keep bitching casually at each other about their kids while they're trying to do their super-dangerous job, just like they'd be doing if they were a married heterosexual couple instead.

Or like, an explosion-filled action movie without much romance where the main character makes a totally offhand comment three-quarters of the way through the film (after the audience has cheered him a load of times and decided this guy is really cool) that reveals that he's definitely gay but has nothing to do with the plot — he might as well have mentioned that he's allergic to shellfish or something.

I wish the no big deal thing happened more often, not just with gay characters, but with like, women and stuff too.

If you are interested, there is a Static Shock fan film out that looks pretty good, though I've only watched the trailer (http://www.comicsalliance.com/2012/04/13/static-shock-blackout-fan-film-full-length-stefan-dezil/). It's not a feature film, but it could be entertaining, at least! And I'm good with anything involved gay pirates.

I really, really want a Batwoman: Elegy movie (or any Batwoman movie, really, but an Elegy adaption would be most likely and make the most sense). Animated, live-action, I don't care, I'd just want it to somehow capture the look of J.H. Williams III's art, and to be true to Kate as a character. I'd love to see the scene where she is discharged, particularly, and I'd be interesting to see how Black Alice's very unique look would adapt to being in motion. I feel like a Batwoman movie would be really beautiful.

I also still want my Donald-Glover-as-Spider-Man movie, IDGAF how possible it is now (he'd be in his mid thirties by the time the current movie series ends, most likely). He could be an aged-up Miles in Spider-Man 2, a new character, anything, I just want it so bad.

Thank you for the link to that trailer! I can't watch it right now, but I'm just happy it even exists, yessss.

I'm with you on Batwoman. I don't follow the comics, but the character is fascinating and the art is very Sin City-esque, which I'd love to see more of (from stories not penned by Frank Miller).

A Pushing Daisies movie. I know the end of season 2 had that quick "Oh, here's what happened to all of them," but I'd love a movie where someone figured out who Chuck was, Ned's powers, etc. Or something that basically was a better ending than what we got.

Static, absolutely. We are looong overdue for a black superhero film.

I think what I'd like to see is Gungrave - mainly because I think the structure of the anime would translate very well to compression in a two-hour film, if done correctly. It's the kind of story where you can convey a lot with only a little. I imagine it in a very sparse, stylish way, replacing Grave's main purple outfit with the red-striped suit from the second game. No idea who'd play in it, though. Maybe Idris Elba as Bear Walken.

I want to say Hellsing, too, but I dunno if I trust live-action to fully convey the awesomeness of an endgame vampire like Alucard. He ain't no mere pretty boy with sharp teeth.

Re: Movies you Want to See Made

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
The only real-life person I can think of to play Alucard would be Adrien Brody. I don't even know why.

I desperately want a grimdark Scooby-Doo movie. I am not joking. It would be amazing and hilarious and wonderful.

(I'd also like to see a Danny Phantom film, but I honestly have no idea who or what format would be able to do it justice. Maybe it's best if that one stays dead and buried. And oh no, I'm making death puns again. Someone PLEASE stop me before I say something like "it doesn't stand a ghost of a chance".)

Hmm....

RE: Danny Phantom. My enthusiasm and plot, let me show you it.

There's two options there: do a straightforward origin/coming-of-age story, which is basically the same for almost every teenage superhero, you just fill in the blanks along the way. I.e., [Character A] is a normal teenage boy who is sort of unpopular at school because of [trait or interest that stands out]. He also has strange/unusual [parent(s) or guardian(s)]. His friend(s), [token kid] and (possibly) [love interest] (who may be the same person) are supportive but can't do anything. One day, something out of the ordinary happens, in a way that is hidden from [the local authority figure(s)], and is precipitated by [Character's stupid action]. He gains [power] and must fight [bad guy/evil force] with it despite having little to no idea how to use it safely. Various mishaps may occur. A montage may occur. [Character] may face [villain] at least once and get his ass handed to him. [Character] may get in trouble with [authority figure(s)] in a way that threatens to expose his power, and must come up with a silly-sounding lie to cover it up, or have to make do with being taken for crazy. He will reveal his power to at least one of his friends, but unless they were there at the time he received them, it'll be after he's mastered them. Someone whom he cares about, but who is not necesarily aware of his power, will be threatened. His secret identity will be threatened. Something meaningful will happen, e.g. an epiphany, and [Character] will suddenly be able to kick [villain]'s ass. Depending on the demographic, someone may die/be maimed. There is a regrouping scene. Credits roll.

(A game for the whole family! Fill in the blanks with your favorite superhero! (Actually, I did this with both Spiderman and Danny Phantom in mind. Also, since it's 11:00 at night, I've just noticed that those short to SM and DP. Hmm. Now I want to read that.))

You could also shake it up a little, but it's been long enough since the original series that most people would want an intro to the character and world. In that case, the people who'd already seen it (an intro, that is, not the movie) would want something new, so live-action would be your best bet for money-making. It would also allow you to escape the Animation Age Ghetto, and be a bit scarier with the ghosts, or play their appearances for laughs (I'm looking at you, Box Ghost), or else do things you couldn't with the original animation style (e.g., translucent ghosts/Danny, a subtler "aura," whatever). You'd have to be careful not to have Maddie and Jack look like Ghostbusters with better special effects, though, otherwise people will come out of it saying, "Well, that was a nice superhero origin story with the Ghostbusters as background characters. A little strange, though."

Your other option would be picking up one of the plot threads from the show, and assuming your target audience of people who've seen the show, or at least who vaguely remember the premise, is large enough that you can make money off of it. (You could also tie it in with the first idea.) For example, Vlad comes back to Earth, plotting revenge (a game-changer, as his and Danny's secrets are out). Or Dark Phantom/Dark Danny/Future Danny escapes. Clockwork needs [task] done. Valerie remains convinced that Danny is evil, or she continues to fight genuinely harmful ghosts and is captured (and rescues herself, thank you very much, and if that's the case, discovers a larger plot about [whatever the hell]). Danny is stranded in the ghost zone for some reason. And so on. Again, the darker the storyline, the more realistic you're gonna want the animation, especially for a big-budget movie. Lots of people will look at a movie, see only the style, and sort into an age group, regardless of rating. In this case, if Dark Phantom's a major character, if people die, if there's blood, if there's anything that wouldn't be appropriate for under-twelves - don't animate it in the original style. (Not that I think blood is inappropriate for under-twelves, but the kind of parents who only pay attention to the animation style might.)

I could ramble some more, but I should really go to bed. TLDR: a Danny Phantom movie would be feasible, but you'd need to make a lot of decisions based on crowd reactions and style first. Also it's fun to talk about.

I'd love to see a DP film too, but with Steve Marmel gone you just know Butch Hartman would ruin it a la Fairly Odd Parents.

One of Mercedes Lackey's modern day elf books would make for a fun movie. With the horses turning into motorbikes and all.

Static Shock sounds fun! As long as it doesn't end up like that ill-fated basketball player super hero movie from way back.

I'm still waiting on a DragonRiders of Pern movie. Maybe now that the author's dead, it'll actually happen.

I just finished reading The Keys to the Kingdom by Garth Nix and was thinking that those would make an interesting movie series if done well.

I'm also waiting for that Eye of the World movie to come out. Does anyone know if that's still a thing? Did they abandon it?

I want to see some of the movies/series that studios have been teasing the fans about get made, and made well. Top of the list: Dark Tower (*without* Ron Howard please - I think he's the worst possible choice to direct those films/series), Mountains of Madness, Sandman, and Good Omens.

The thing is, everything I want to see done could so easily be ruined by bad casting/direction/art direction that if any of these projects were real I'd be freaking out about how they're going to do all the little minor nitpicky details that no one but hardcore fans would notice.

My mom and I spent *hours* once fancasting a Good Omens movie, and already everyone we want is too old for their parts :(

Jaime Reyes as the Blue Beetle. All I ask is that the non-world saving focus be on his family instead of on hooking him up with someone. Because movies need more family love.

Yeah, late to the party with this thread, but whatever.

The one I would kill to see made is a Batman Beyond film. I've put a lot of thought into this and honestly feel like it is the one that could break the "teenage superhero origin story" model. It's so very easy to do. Batman is already seeped into the public consciousness and even casual fans don't need an hour long introduction to explain the character and where he came from. Passing on the torch would be a different and interesting way to engage the audience, so the story can just get going, freeing up more time for the action and developing personalities.

Plus, Gotham of the future could be incredibly kick-ass in the hands of the right set/CGI designer. And the villains. Oh man, can you just picture Inque in live action? Even a gang of Jokers would a nice and different take on the traditional mooks.

As for who could play Terry and most of the supporting cast, I have no idea. But for Bruce, I demand that Michael Keaton put on some aged-up makeup, because I feel like he would perfect. The man, from his own personal experience, definitely would know how to tap into the bitter, dark edge old Bruce has. Or heck, by the time this movie gets made, with all the red tape it would need to go through, he wouldn't even need the make-up.

Anyway, I could ramble on about this forever, but that's my two cents.

It has been optioned for film already, but the Newsflesh Trilogy by Mira Grant could make a great movie.

I'm just a bit afraid of what would happen, I don't really see an easy way to translate the end of chapter blogposts to the big screen, and I guess they'll have to downplay the relationship between the Mason sibilings (and it's gonna be really weird on the third book movie if they do it) but so long as they don't make movie Georgia any less awesome than book Georgia I'm fine with it.

If anything I guess they could just do Feed since it works pretty well as a stand alone.
