Rebuild sort of fixes it, though. Especially in the 2nd movie, where she takes a much more active role (first part of Rebuild is basically an HD remake of TV eps. 1-6)

There is a difference in how the show did it and the fandom does though. In the show, it's shown that what has been done to her is really wrong and creepy, and she came off as more haunting than sexy to me. Asuka and Misato were the characters who were much more sexualized in canon. In fandom, she's treated like a sex doll, and it weirds me out. I don't mind the saturation of NGE merchandize in the market, and I even like some of the sexy girl figures,but I really don't understand the ones that sexualize Rei. After watching the show, it seems odd that someone would feel that way towards her. But I am not an otaku/hikki or male, so that might be why.

That's def why. To them she's just an extremely lifelike anime pillow. I think she's the ~ideal woman~ for a lot of neckbeards and it's super gross!

Yeah, Rei was written to seem creepy (and in my opionon it worked) but a large part of the fandom didn't see it that way and saw her as sexy.

I would be more inclined to agree if anime didn't have a ~thing with passive/unwilling female characters being seen as the sexiest possible thing. Although maybe they were trying to subvert that in the show and failed.

The show came out in like 95. In many ways vast swathes of the modern ~moe~ trend can be traced directly back to Rei, and there's been a lot said by the shows producers that that was the intent.

No, that's fandom. She was apparently supposed to be creepy, but this rather backfired.

Except there were probably about 5,000 ways to show she was creepily passive without titty groping. I'm not unwilling to believe they were trying to subvert the "Passivity Is Sexy!" thing that anime is obsessed with, but imo it wasn't successful.
