Pretty sure the show itself did that. "Look how passive she is, boys. You could totally grab her titty and she wouldn't even care. Mmmmm."

Rebuild sort of fixes it, though. Especially in the 2nd movie, where she takes a much more active role (first part of Rebuild is basically an HD remake of TV eps. 1-6)

There is a difference in how the show did it and the fandom does though. In the show, it's shown that what has been done to her is really wrong and creepy, and she came off as more haunting than sexy to me. Asuka and Misato were the characters who were much more sexualized in canon. In fandom, she's treated like a sex doll, and it weirds me out. I don't mind the saturation of NGE merchandize in the market, and I even like some of the sexy girl figures,but I really don't understand the ones that sexualize Rei. After watching the show, it seems odd that someone would feel that way towards her. But I am not an otaku/hikki or male, so that might be why.

That's def why. To them she's just an extremely lifelike anime pillow. I think she's the ~ideal woman~ for a lot of neckbeards and it's super gross!

Yeah, Rei was written to seem creepy (and in my opionon it worked) but a large part of the fandom didn't see it that way and saw her as sexy.

I would be more inclined to agree if anime didn't have a ~thing with passive/unwilling female characters being seen as the sexiest possible thing. Although maybe they were trying to subvert that in the show and failed.

The show came out in like 95. In many ways vast swathes of the modern ~moe~ trend can be traced directly back to Rei, and there's been a lot said by the shows producers that that was the intent.

No, that's fandom. She was apparently supposed to be creepy, but this rather backfired.

Except there were probably about 5,000 ways to show she was creepily passive without titty groping. I'm not unwilling to believe they were trying to subvert the "Passivity Is Sexy!" thing that anime is obsessed with, but imo it wasn't successful.

I do agree that there's the canon version of Rei and the fanon version and people get them confused

I didn't like Rei at all the first time I watched Evangelion when I was like, 19 or whatever, but when I watched it again many years later I warmed up to her character more. Especially after End of Evangelion.

oooh, that's too bad. I'm about ten episodes into NGE and I love Rei so far - but I really hope she meets her potential as a character. If they just have her as background noise for the whole thing I'll be disappointed.

Watching Evangelion for the first time recently (I know, I'm way late), and I'm so confused. TVTropes had me believing that Rei was just that... the Rei trope. Emotionless creepy girl.

She's so far from that. The first few episodes she really gets a feature, her emotions are almost uncontrollable. She's trying so hard to please Gendou, she's always smiling when he's near. She flipped out on Shinji and slapped him in the face. I could tell she was furious under the not really emotive face.

...She's the opposite of her own trope. I'm so lost. @_@

This isn't the first time this has happened. I have yet to see the Worf Effect at all in Star Trek TNG. I'm starting to think that TVTropes is just full of character-bashing trolls.
