Yet again, the SJW brigade twists their panties and clutches their pearls in an effort to shame people into thinking how they want.

When I read the books, and realized District 12 was Appalachia, I understood that to mean Katniss, Gale, et. al were Caucasian, because that's the dominant racial make up of that region. Similarly, when I read about Finnick, I assumed he was of English/Scottish/Irish ancestry. Why? Because I'm from the Northeast of North America. You know, where the fishing grounds are? And guess what? The VAST majority of us are white.

Contrary to what you might believe, not every region of the world is an ethnic melting pot, for fuck's sake. There's diversity, and then there's being too politically correct to recognize reality.

And fyi? Being white is nothing to be ashamed of.

IA with what you're saying, though not maybe how you're saying it? IDK, the comment as a whole kinda rubbed me the wrong way.

But the whole local population thing, that was my thinking, as well.

Except these books are set in the far future when the entire surviving population (at least of North America, which is itself fairly diverse) is concentrated in those areas. And even if there were no apocalypse, there's still no reason to assume that the demographics of a certain area will be the same after such a long time. The author even said most of the characters were probably mixed.

Also calm down. No one said you should be ashamed of being white. Yeesh.

I dunno I grew up in New England and I knew quite a few black people with Scottish/British last names. From slave names through Scottish missionaries backgrounds. Also Tan/light eyes/blonde hair/Scottish and/or British names describes no less than three different biracial black/white families I grew up with.

Also is this is a post-apocalyptic world that's lost quite a bit of land mass there would be a crap ton of migration to safe zones. Just because currently the App mountains are predominantly white wouldn't automatically mean that would stay the same. People flee conflict all the time and migrate.

Also I'm speaking as a Portuguese woman who is not olive skinned, but half my family is. I'm fair skinned and burn easily, but my mother and two of my sisters can get really tan.

I think it's ridiculous that people asking for more inclusive casts or pointing out that tan doesn't automatically have to mean white is considered pearl clutching or SJW.

I think it depends on the state for that comparison, though. I'm in NH and almost everyone is white; the only black people I know have distinct African names as well. In like Massachusetts though, I'm sure it's different.

Yes I was raised in Providence, Rhode Island and it was really ethnically diverse. There were a ton of black, white and Jewish kids in my elementary school. Then a lot of Ukrainian Jewish, Latino (especially Costa Rican and Dominican) Cambodian, Vietnamese and Laosian kids in middle school (many of them moving west by high school). In high school it was white, black, Latino (both island and South American and many of which were assumed to be black because they were darker skinned), some smatterings of different Asian groups and a lot of Jewish kids.

This was in the mid 80s through late 90s so I don't know what the current demographics look like.

Rhode Island and Massachusetts has quite a bit of diversity depending on what city/neighborhood you visit. When I lived out in Portsmouth (same island as Newport) all my neighbors were white.

"And fyi? Being white is nothing to be ashamed of."
you tell it brotha. Don't forget, there's an Official Disgruntled White People of the Internet meeting at my house on Friday. We'll discuss how many black friends we have, how racist we totally aren't, why there isn't a White Entertainment Television, and all issues important to any proud white person. After that, we'll go paint the town red, dancing badly and singing drunkenly along to Don't Stop Believing. It'll be totally epic, bro.

Because, seriously, how DARE people want to take Katniss and Gale from us? What will the white people do? How will we go on?

Hold on while I internalize my guilt for others' past and present actions and inactions...

Ah, there we go. Yes, feeling ashamed of one's race is fun for the whole family.

Seriously, not wallowing in guilt doesn't mean you are a disgruntled white person upset with POCs for appropriating 'your' entertainment. It just means you don't wallow in guilt for the actions of others.

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2012-07-18 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Honey, no one is asking you to feel guilty about anything, okay? No one. Please show me one person who told you to feel guilty, because it seems to me like that is something you made up in your own head and are bringing into this debate because it makes you sound like the victim. How in fuck's name does "more POC please" translate into "feel guilty for being white" in the mind of anyone who doesn't already have some weird guilt issues?

I thought District 4 was the Gulf of Mexico. I was under the impression it was a warm region.

I also thought Finnick might be Lation, but that's based on where I thought the district was located.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-18 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
District 10 is clearly Texas/Louisiana. And the rest of the SE is either D11 or D12. So, yeah, no. Not Gulf of Mexico.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-18 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
... Don't both those states have coastline along the Gulf? I wasn't clear I guess, I didn't mean in the gulf, just bordering it. Like Texas/Louisiana.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-19 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with the anon above. District 11 us probably Texas, therefore, likely not District 4. Suzanne Collins wouldn't be so heavy-handed with the cow stuff if she wasn't intending it on being the Texas area.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-19 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
District 10. Got it. Wow, I can't read. I'll just go beat my head against the wall for a bit.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-18 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think Suzanne Collins meant for the Districts represented to necessarily be exactly like the modern-day regions they correspond to.
I currently live by the mountain regions of Appalachia and they don't strike me as a particularly diverse region and yet Collins stated that Katniss could feasibly be multiethnic. ( "It is a time period where hundreds of years have passed from now. There’s been a lot of ethnic mixing.") There are also pockets of Appalachia that are bi-racial and even tri-racial and aren't the majority but could still be part of Katniss' heritage even without Collins saying that there'd been considerable blurring of racial lines by the time the books start.

Plus, the Northeast of North America is very racially diverse. Parts of Canada and the Northern fishing states have strong First Nations/Native American communities and large immigrant populations even currently. New York for instance may not be VASTLY white.

Anyway, my folks are from Central America and a lot of them are not white, dark-eyed but redheaded and tan. So, its not usual perhaps, but feasible.
