So tell me, where in the book did it say Finnick was white? Considering it's the future, more POC wouldn't be out of the question...oh. They're in the background, I see.

idk, it is annoying that say, for Katniss who's skin colour is ambiguous, they only asked for white actresses to apply for the role. it's total white-washing and racism, there's no way around it.

but at the same time, jfc how long has it been they're beating a dead horse at this point.

I think there should be more POC in media, period. They should have been stated as POC in the book.

That being said, I'm getting really tired of all the whining about it. Yes, there should be more POCs. No, you're not gonna convince the studios/producers/whoever to pick them just because you threw a tantrum on the internet. If you're so invested, write letters, watch movies with POC casts, show your support rather than your hate.

Yet again, the SJW brigade twists their panties and clutches their pearls in an effort to shame people into thinking how they want.

When I read the books, and realized District 12 was Appalachia, I understood that to mean Katniss, Gale, et. al were Caucasian, because that's the dominant racial make up of that region. Similarly, when I read about Finnick, I assumed he was of English/Scottish/Irish ancestry. Why? Because I'm from the Northeast of North America. You know, where the fishing grounds are? And guess what? The VAST majority of us are white.

Contrary to what you might believe, not every region of the world is an ethnic melting pot, for fuck's sake. There's diversity, and then there's being too politically correct to recognize reality.

And fyi? Being white is nothing to be ashamed of.

I'm pale and tan easily. That doesn't make me white.

No where in the series is Finnick stated to be white. Meaning it is possible he is a POC or mixed ethnicity. Rather than use this as an opportunity for a talented actor of color to get some exposure, we get yet another white person in a mostly white cast.

So I'm gonna have to counter you with, white people and racism apologists need to shut the fuck up with their approval of POC continually being shafted.

I got the feeling Finnick's description was vague enough to be one of several races. Yeah, he could be tanned-white, or he could be Hispanic (who are perfectly capable of light eyes and hair on top of dark skin genetically) or maybe some kind of mixed race. Because Panem is the United States, and we're pretty racially diverse, so by the time Hunger Games takes place, we'd be pretty nicely mixed.

I just don't see why he can't. What's the big deal if a character of ambiguous race is made something other than white?

Honestly, I didn't picture most of the characters as just one race.

Really? That's the fan race issue that bothers you? Not the huge outcry over Pru being black? That one doesn't get a 'shut up and enjoy the movie?' Yeah....

Finnick has bronze hair. Bronze is more of a darkish, reddish brown, which lots of black people have, for instance. Green eyes? Lots of PoC have that color, too. Tan does not imply white guy with tan. It simply implies tan skin. Lets also consider that District 4 is farther south in North America, possibly where Mexico used to be. None of these things scream white guy. You can interpret it that way, but it's not a solid fact.

Someone who actually fits the description is Jesse Williams, who is biracial. He's got tan skin, green eyes, and could dye his hair bronze. He fits it more than guys like Garrett Hedlund, who is blonde, blue-eyed, and not tan whatsoever... but of course, people claim Garrett Hedlund is perfect whereas Jesse "doesn't fit because he's black"...

To be honest, I'm okay with them being white. "Olive-skinned" could mean white, after all. What bugs me is the assumption that "if it doesn't say, they're white." "Olive-skinned" could be white, sure, but it could also be not white. And when people not only assume it's white, but the casting call specifically requests white actors only, that's flat-out appalling.

Even if Finnick was blatantly described as a white guy (which he wasn't), it'd be cool if they cast someone not-white in the role. PoC characters get whitewashed all the damn time for films, even when expressly described as being black, hispanic, asian, middle eastern, etc. But the second people suggest casting a PoC in a maybe-white character's role, people dig up every description and say "SEE, HE'S WHITE!"

However, casting whites in POC is equally stupid. People are way too high strung.

but in the books katniss identifies as "seam" like her father and never describes her mother or prim as such, which (for me), kind of implies she didn't appear white even if one of her parents was, which is probably why people find jennifer lawrence's casting kind of controversial. i think jen did a fab job as katniss, but that still doesn't stop it being problematic.

Is it ok for me to hate Peeta's casting still? Because that guy doesn't look like the way he's described in the books AT ALL, and it pisses me (and my friend) off so much.

But if his being white isn't actually important to the story in any way, why can't he be played by a POC actor? I know some people are being tryhards, but in this case I think they're right. I mean, if they'd cast, I don't know, a black Harry Potter, that would've been weird because it clearly defies the description in the book, but for something more open-ended? Why not open the field to all actors and just do it based on--dare I say it--talent?

Most of the racial descriptions in the book were pretty damn vague, if you ask me. 'Olive-skinned' could mean pretty much anything, as could 'tan'. The problem is when those roles are specifically cast with only white actors in mind because Hollywood believes white to be the default race, unless otherwise specified. The world of the books, as described by the AUTHOR, is multiracial so I think it blows that the majority of the cast is white.

Jennifer Lawrence did an excellent job as Katniss but that doesn't maker her casting any less controversial, as only white actresses were brought in to audition for the role.

tan doesn't automatically mean white, dear

but okay. Race is pretty vague for most of the characters (there are some exceptions, Rue and Cinna are CLEARLY black) but the problem isn't that these movies HAVE TO HAVE some POCs around omg. Jennifer Lawrence is a fantastic Katniss. The problem is the fact that other than those two black characters, the only actors the casting dudes seem willing to even consider are white people, and....oh yeah, more white people.

Slightly OT, but all this discussion reminds me of my friend insisting that someone from Turkey can't possibly be white, because according to her if you're from somewhere other than the US, Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, and maybe Australia, you can't possibly be white.

In spite of the countless well-written essays all over the Internet, yet another person still doesn't get it even though plenty of people have refuted this argument multiple times. Did you even read what people have been talking about? I don't think you did.

Most people are not upset because they believe Katniss or Finnick are not white. They are upset because, like almost every single goddamn movie ever made in Hollywood, Katniss and Finnick are not given the option to be anything other than white, even when the descriptions in the book greatly allow for it. (Well, I don't know how the casting call for Finnick looked, but Katniss was pretty goddamn blatant).

Sorry not we social justice advocates think fighting racism is more important than ignoring it so some people can feel more comfortable with the status quo. I am inclined to think you some variety of asshat if you believe that serious discussions of racism and Hollywood casting and fighting for equal opportunity and representation in visual media is just "whining." If anyone is whining it's the people who don't want to face reality or even consider the possibility that the world they are comfortable with may have some serious problems.

Even if you do not agree that there ultimately is a problem with what happened in the casting, dismissing those who do worry as "whiners" is absolutely pig-headed when you consider the history of racism in Hollywood. It is very legitimate for people to be concerned about what the hell is going on, especially with a popular movie franchise.

As a POC I'd rather see actors chosen who can say the lines, and make me feel the part no matter the skin tone, than any kind of shallow, meaningless token POC that seems to be persistent in Hollywood.

I mean, I agree with you, but if the character's race wasn't specifically alluded to in the book, why not make them a PoC? It's fun to speculate.
