but in the books katniss identifies as "seam" like her father and never describes her mother or prim as such, which (for me), kind of implies she didn't appear white even if one of her parents was, which is probably why people find jennifer lawrence's casting kind of controversial. i think jen did a fab job as katniss, but that still doesn't stop it being problematic.

No, exactly this! And more on that theme, I had JUST read the book when I saw the movie, so I remembered clearly that Katniss said how she and Gale had ~the Seam~ look, olive skin and dark hair & eyes, that most people in her district had, but her mother and sister didn't (and only a few other people, like Peeta and I think Madge). And in the movie when all those District 12 kids were gathered together for the Reaping, I couldn't help noticing THEY WERE LITERALLY 95% SUPER-WHITE AND BLONDE. I think there were some random occasional POCs here and there but Katniss was one of the darkest people in that scene. Wat.
