You too? lol, the first time I saw the trailer I asked my friend who she was. Thought she was a new character...

I feel bad griping about it, because they hottied up Kaidan as well, quite obviously, but at least Kaidan was still recognizable. Not only was Ashley's character design blandly generic, her ME3 character arc was as well. Bleh.

Yea, Kaidan looked like himself, just better! I haven't played the game with Ashley alive yet so I can't say anything about her character arc, but I'm iffy on her character design.

They barely changed Kaidan at all. They adjusted him to match their new graphics and gave him better gear. Ashley got plastic surgery, it was gross. They should have gone closer to concept art and given her a pixie if they wanted to change her hair, instead of unprofessional hair and lip gloss.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say they "barely" changed him. He definitely got more muscular. But hey, people work out. Eat more.

And hey, people get new haircuts/makeup too, even bizarrely impractical ones. But changing Ashley's entire face is a very different matter.

I hate the face changing, but the fact that "sexed her up" when her entire character in ME1 was that she was completely aware that she was hot, but it wasn't what she was about. She was a solider and she wouldn't have a practical hair cut. Miranda sexing herself up sure, it's totally IC, but doing that to Ash was just irritating beyond belief.

Then again, Kaidan got a personality transplant in the third game, so who's really the winner? (I don't know what happened to Ash, haven't done that playthrough until I find a good mod to change her appearance closer to normal or at least downplay the makeup).

Ash's sidestory was fucking awful. It was generic as all hell. You literally could have replaced her with any other soldier in the Alliance. It was also extremely boring. Ugh, why did they have to destroy that character?

I'm never going to get around to another playthrough of ME3. I can't see Ashley's character ruined like Kaidan's was.

Eh I think Kaidan's worked if, and only if, you play male!Shep and choose him as an LI. That was surprisingly well done. Otherwise...

I romanced Kaidan with my mShep in my only playthrough of ME3, so I'm wondering... In what way is he different if you don't romance him or if you're an fShep?

He's bland. They saved most of the lines with emotional impact, and the VA's best performances, for the love story it seems like. I haven't romanced him as fem!Shep, but it was definitely true if he's just your buddy, and I've heard from others that did romance him that this is the case. There's a whole conversation in the Presidium that fem!Shep doesn't get, apparently.

How exactly did they ruin Kaidan? *genuinely curious*
miarrow: (ME : Rocking with Matriarchs)

[personal profile] miarrow 2012-07-18 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Well in ME1, he was probably the least drama free romance in any Bioware game. He had issues, but he told you flat out that he was dealing with them and that he was fine. He wasn't someone you had to fix. It was like basically you were romancing an adult and it was awesome. In ME2 he got pissed, which I let slide, and then in ME3 they made him in this whiny, kind of horrifying caricature of what people thought Carth Onasi from KOTOR was. There were a couple of times where he was himself, but mostly, he was "SHEPARD! SHEPARD!" "SHEPARD!" and it was like, dude relax already.

Plus I thought it was laughable that he and I guess any other LI from ME1 would consider you dating someone in ME2 cheating. It had been two years and Virmire wasn't exactly you getting back together.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-18 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. Maybe I have a high threshold for whiny, because I never noticed any of that. I mean, the whole bit with Horizon pissed me the hell off (pretty standard), but I found the romance in ME3 sweet.

[personal profile] miarrow 2012-07-18 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. I think it was mostly the head-jerk I had from how calm and drama-free he was in ME1 (and that was what I liked about him). I still had a lot of moments I liked him, but man, there was so much drama.

I think maybe it's different if you were "loyal" or whatever.

Eh, I still managed to get an amazing scene with Thane and the best bromance in the world with Garrus and Liara's friendship, so I was pretty satisfied on that account.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-18 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
Different Anon here. :)

Mars is probably his whiniest moment because he won't quit complaining about Shepard joining Cerberus. My f!Shep stayed loyal to him in ME2 and even then he didn't cut her any slack for it. I find the Renegade responses in that section VERY fitting. I don't remember the exact wording, but one of her lines is "I'm done explaining myself to you." Going back to Cerberus' effed-up experiments in ME1, I understand why he's still apprehensive. But he is mostly drama-free for the rest of the game (I say mostly because there's a certain scene on the Citadel when I'm like "Really, Kaidan? You REALLY want to go through this again?").

As for Ashley, I always thought she was pretty. Someone needs to throw her a hairpin or something to get the bangs out of her face though.
