I recently read Railsea by China Mieville and loved every minute of it. It's sci-fi steampunk/diesel punk with amazing world-building and character writing.

Ooooooh, that sounds awesome. Parasol Protectorate is steampunk!lite; delving more into the genre sounds like a good idea. :)

I have been on a China Mieville kick lately. Haven't gotten to Railsea yet, but I just read and LOVED Embassytown, which is more traditionally sci-fi in its premise, but he's so fabulously creative in everything he does.
