What book should I read next, fs?

[personal profile] lunabee34 2012-07-17 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll be done with The Parasol Protectorate soon (highly recommended) and need something new to start. I love sci-fi, fantasy, supernatural, classics, everything! Rec me the best book you've read this year so far.

I recently wrote a link roundup post that had a lot of stuff about Tricia Sullivan in it, linking to excerpts and ebooks and so on. She's an SF writer, but a refreshingly unusual one.

Oooooooooh, that sounds really interesting. Junk food, pop music, the maul mall? Oh yes. :) Thank you!

I recently read Railsea by China Mieville and loved every minute of it. It's sci-fi steampunk/diesel punk with amazing world-building and character writing.

Ooooooh, that sounds awesome. Parasol Protectorate is steampunk!lite; delving more into the genre sounds like a good idea. :)

I have been on a China Mieville kick lately. Haven't gotten to Railsea yet, but I just read and LOVED Embassytown, which is more traditionally sci-fi in its premise, but he's so fabulously creative in everything he does.

Well, let me see...

The Arrival by Shaun Tan (no words, but uses illustrations to tell the story).

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (adopted girl in Nazi Germany).

The Taking by Dean Koontz (the end of the world... in a grotesque and horrifying way).

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett (an angel and a demon grew fond of humans and try to prevent he apocalypse).

I love love love Good Omens. To bitty bits. (Have you read fanfic? There's always a great turnout at Yuletide for that fandom)

I have heard of The Book Thief before and been intrigued. I'll definitely have to check that out.

And I always love a good apocalypse. Thank you!

I really liked Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. It's pretty much an 80's-gasm though, so...xD

I just recently read American Psycho which is an 80's-gasm plus snuff porn ala grotesquerie LOL, so I can probably deal. :) Thanks for the rec!

I second Ready Player One. Some of the pop culture references are not nearly as organically integrated as others, but the overall story is so great that I don't care.

I liked Momo by Michael Ende, which I recommend wholeheartedly, and I've been reading the Hercule Poirot books by Agatha Christie. They're kind of hit and miss, with some being more exciting than others, and there is, sadly, this layer of classism and xenophobia here and there, but if you can get past that, she writes very charming characters and they're a fun read.

If you want something more spiritual, try the books by Florence Scovel Shinn.

The Man in the High Castle.

Philip K Dicks best work, and easily his best plotted, most tightly woven, and character driven exploration of the nature of reality.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I had never heard of him before picking up the book in a small bookstore on vacation, and he has been my favorite author ever since.

The plot is a bit convoluted to summarize, but anyone who's a fan of mythology should absolutely read the book. It's set in a world where all the gods from all the mythologies are real, and their power level is dependent on who believes in them. The main character gets recruited into helping the older gods in a prizefight against newer, modern gods.

TL;DR MYTHOLOGY BLUH BLUH SO GOOD OMG

I can't remember if I read this one or not. I'm thinking not since I'm drawing such a blank, but I love Neil Gaiman. His short story collections are exquisite.

I kind of liked "The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern - the plot isn't all that original, but the style and writing are quite good.

I also like The Dresden Files books and the Naomi Novik series of Temeraire.

I have Night Circus on my list already! It looks fascinating to me. Thanks for reminding me!!!

My husband has read the Dresden books, but I don't think we own them. :(

I've been wondering about the Naomi Novik series; is it really military focused? I find myself getting really bored with battle scenes in books.

i'm reading "the windup girl" by paul bacigalupi" right now, and so far it's pretty good! the premise is that ge crops/pests ran rampant and wiped out a lot of genetic diversity and the fall of civilization happened. i'm still not entirely certain what the plot is, but the worldbuilding is fun, and so far the science isn't entirely implausible!

I... I'm not sure I've read a published book this year.

I think maybe I read Margaret Atwood's 'Cat's Eye' and 'The Robber Bride' this year. But, that could have been last year...
Anyway, if you like Atwood you'll like these. The plots are kind of hard to explain. They are about women and relationships and women's relationships with each other.

I can rec lots (well, maybe not lots) of novel length fic I you want. That's all I've been reading this year! (You've probably read them already, though.)

Alex Rider by Anthony Horowitz - complete in nine volumes, spy fiction with a touch of comedy and science fiction. Very entertaining.

"Night Singing" by Kierin Meehan - enchanting little kids' book about a circus and the moon.

"An Imaginary Life" by David Malouf - ostensibly about Ovid's exile, but really a framework for Malouf's ideas about transformation. It's beautifully written, though.
