Re: What book should I read next, fs?

American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I had never heard of him before picking up the book in a small bookstore on vacation, and he has been my favorite author ever since.

The plot is a bit convoluted to summarize, but anyone who's a fan of mythology should absolutely read the book. It's set in a world where all the gods from all the mythologies are real, and their power level is dependent on who believes in them. The main character gets recruited into helping the older gods in a prizefight against newer, modern gods.

TL;DR MYTHOLOGY BLUH BLUH SO GOOD OMG

I can't remember if I read this one or not. I'm thinking not since I'm drawing such a blank, but I love Neil Gaiman. His short story collections are exquisite.

Yes! And American gods does have one or two short stories cleverly inserted, tales of immigrants coming to America and bringing their gods with them. It's a beautiful work, especially if you are American, because the descriptions of the people and places, especially those places that are considered sacred, strike a chord in anyone who has ever taken a road trip or visited a kitschy tourist trap.
