I really don't get everyone talking about the secondhand embarrassment. I experience it religiously pretty much in daily life, but I never really felt it from the show at all. I suppose because the situations in which you were supposed to feel it were by and large so ridiculously removed from reality, it was hard for me to connect with it?

Yeah, I get secondhand embarrassment a lot, but never from this show. I get it over ridiculous shit (when I was like 7, my mom was reading Ramona the Pest to me and in the book Ramona didn't understand that "For the present" meant "for now" and she thought her teacher was going to give her an actual present if she just sat still and so all the kids went outside to play and she stayed inside and her teacher was about to come talk to her and I ran out of the room and buried my head under a pillow in anticipation of the embarrassment that Ramona was about to face), but I was always fine with the Office. Probably what you said about it being over-the-top. That said, whatever, people have their squicks.

This. I can understand it with the UK Office, because it's much more realistic and, even though it doesn't bother me, I can see why it would make someone cringe. With US Office, they usually add such a large dose of the ridiculous that I can't see how anyone would relate it to the real world.

I think, in the beginning, they tried more realistic awkwardness, like with Jim writing that embarrassing email to Pam apologizing for flirting with her at karate practice. But the more relateable, realistic stuff seemed to fade out pretty quickly.

Embarrassment is embarrassment, whether it's "ridiculous" or not. Please stop trying to invalidate people who do not like the show for this reason.

oh calm yourself. no one is "invalidating" you for not liking The Office, anon was just offering a different opinion.
