You seemed to have missed the part where they actually were written to be a couple initially, but that got changed to save some people's ~delicate sensibilities~.

That is why homophobia exists.

Maybe I'm missing something but it sounds like you described a symptom of homophobia not a "reason" for it.

It may also be a symptom, but stopping same-sex relationships from being shown on certain types of entertainment can often perpetuate the idea that same-sex relationships are abnormal, and have no place being in something that children might watch. Lack of exposure to same-sex romances in things can be just as much a reason for the continuing negativity towards LGBT people as anything else.
