I've only ever eaten homemade hummus and I make widly varying flavors from chipotle to peanut butter so I'm a little unsure what smell you mean. Is there a smell the store bought kind have or are you talking about smelling the tahini in plain hummus?

It's a much bigger problem with the store-bought kind because it's stored cold, but there's like, a smell that tahini has when it's cold (I HAVE NO IDEA IF THIS IS A THING OTHER PEOPLE NOTICE AND I CANNOT REALLY DESCRIBE IT) so when one of my office mates gets their hummus out of the fridge for a snack, it is just… no. But hummus (or plain tahini) that is not served chilled… smells different. IDK I AM PROBABLY NUTS.

Thanks for explaining. I have no idea if you are nuts but I doubt it.

Thank you for mentioning peanut butter hummus! I had no idea that was a thing, but it looks like a great idea.

IDK if it is a thing either I just make it for my mom. She eats it on toasted pita bread or even in a wrap. Sometimes I use peanut butter to replace tahini if I'm out.

We make our hummus without tahini and I am super curious now...how much pb do you put in your version? Do you have a recipe that you are willing to share?

I am gluten free and hummus is a staple of my new diet. Would love to try this.

TIA

I rarely use recipes as I prefer to just wing it in the kitchen but when I do use a recipe and sub pb for tahini I've never made adjustments to the measurements. Though the peanut butter I buy/make is not very sweet so if yours is I would maybe keep an eye on that and compensate with a spice or something?

Are you still adding garlic and cumin? We wing it too so perhaps I'll just start with the basic stuff and go from there. Thanks for the info. Time to play Kitchen Lab with my kids, lol

Depending on what I'm making but I usually do. So far my favorite peanut butter hummus was paired with chipotle peppers in adobo sauce. My mom prefers turmeric and paprika as well in her "plain" hummus and I've never had a problem with the peanut butter overwhelming the dish. Plain peanut butter hummus is also a nice delivery system for hemp seed.

Don't you have to keep hummus cold to keep it from going bad? Or do you mean just that when it's time to serve it, it's meant to be room temperature?

I just mean serving it at room temperature! You definitely want to refrigerate it before/between servings.
