And I always thought it's a lazy insult. Like how "emo" is now outdated, look "weeaboo" makes us insulters seem so trendy. Bloody yay. >_>

Word. And the thing is, it's really overused. As in the overuse killed any meaning the word may have had, and secondly, people being infatuated with countries/nations/media/products other than their own is not a horrible thing. Most of us wouldn't consider someone who's head-over-heels in love with England, loves soccer and tea, affects a British accent, and wants to move to London/study at Oxford/etcetera someday as being "just a stupid wannabe British," even if their first contact with British culture was Red Dwarf or Monty Python, so why do we treat people who are the same way toward Japan differently?

Agreed

Oh NO. Even if you only liked "Britain" because you want to hump Hugh Laurie, think Liquid Snake's accent is so sexy and you can't tell the differences between "England" and "Britain", it still makes you oh so sophisticated.

Ironically I've heard of the term "Fake Britwat" about two years before "weeaboo". Though given the circumstance that I won't bore you with, I think that one particular person really deserved it. Still, simply because some Japanese wannabes are obnoxious and disrespectful, it doesn't mean every single person who ever showed any interests in Japan must immediately be fad followers.

But hey, then those people might actually have to come up with their own insult terms. That's a bit too much to expect, neh? =)

Meanwhile, if you know the difference between Shinjuku and Harajuku you're probably not going to be nastily surprised you're a weeaboo. It's so silly.

*nods* And I've met people in anime fandom who I truly do not like, and I do have a bit of a cringe of embarrassment at the more overenthusiastic people who don't get that Japan has done some Very Bad Things. That said, I still think just because a few bad apples exist doesn't justify the existence of what is, in many ways, a hate term based on a cultural identification, which is why I hate "weeaboo" so much.

Word, and it also doesn't mean that even the fad followers won't either get bored and find a new fad, or, more interestingly, learn more, read, interact, and possibly develop some lasting non-faddish interest.

It seems to be. It's also too much to expect that they might actually step outside the "haha, look how cool I look being a bully" box and get that if someone isn't causing trouble aside from "being weird," the best thing to do is leave them alone if you can't find anything nice to say.
