Um...too bad? Sorry, I've got nothing against genderswap cosplay or fic, but in comic and movie canon AND in mythology, Loki was male.

Actually, woman!Loki is also comic canon. He was wearing Sif's body for a while.

I haven't read the comics so forgive my ignorance, but is taking over another person's body really the same thing as presenting yourself, in your own body, with a different sex/gender than before?

Not sure if I'm getting the wrong idea of what happened

Ok, it was a bit complicated but: All the aasgardians died in a battle, and then Thor was bringing them back one by one. Loki reappeared, but with a female body instead of a male one, SAYING that it was his body, and that it was him, just now, a her. She even posed as Scarlet Witch for a while. Later it was discovered that she had stolen Sif's body -who was at the time dying as a mortal in a hospital. But at first it was treated as Loki shape-shifting. The image from the secret is a cosplay from that run.

That's what happened: he took Sif's body and put her into a old woman's one. But he is a shapeshifter, so who knows?

Loki has taken female form several times in comic canon though.

[personal profile] lovelycudy 2012-07-19 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
You are both right and wrong. Loki is a male who can transform himself into a woman (not sure if he IDs as anything but male those times, though).

(Anonymous) 2012-07-19 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
He did seem to identify as male when he was wearing Sif's body, and everybody knew he was a dude "shapeshifted" into a female body.

Thank you!

In mythology canon, Loki has also been a pregnant horse.

I just like having chances to bring that up.

[personal profile] lovelycudy 2012-07-19 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Now that would have been amazing to see on the screen. It's comic canon, too, IIRC.

That is one dazzling stud. I can see why Loki would have been interested ;)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-20 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
OP - Yes, I know. That's why I'm not exactly petitioning the filmmakers for a female Loki.

Well, that and I'm not fucking crazy. I know it won't happen. The Loki-wearing-Sif is as close as I'll get. :|

(Though myth!Loki was a shapeshifter and spent eight years on Midgard as a woman married to a farmer!)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-20 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, exactly. You, dear commenter, are wilfully ignorant. Loki's pranced around as a woman both in comics canon AND the original myths. And definitely had a lot of what the Norse considered "feminine" traits.

That said, I think most of the mainstream cishet audience would need smelling salts if a male character presented as female for a subsequent movie. Genre fans are as a whole (slightly) more tolerant.

As for female from the beginning *sigh* I would have found that very aesthetically pleasing, to be shallow, plus yay female villains... though the MCU origin story would have been unavoidably different.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-20 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Both in mythology canon and in comic canon Loki has been a female at times.
