Captian America question

(Anonymous) 2012-07-20 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Just a quick one, got some errands to run.

But in fandom a lot of people treat him like the innocent above all innocents, some shy blushing nice guy - literally nice guy and not a nice guy tm.

I apparently did not pick up on this in the movies? Every time someone writes about him blushing or being a mother to the team I get slapped out of the fic because it is the complete opposite I saw him as. Thankfully he's not the focus of any fics I read, but can't say I enjoy being jolted out of them.

FYI: I saw him as a self righteous prick and didn't like him in the movies. I do prefer fandom!Captain, I just keep not expecting it.

Yeah. My headcanon for him is all over the place. I don't have a good lock on his character now that these two movies are in the mix. I can't decide if I like him from day-to-day. I definitely sympathize with you here.

I can tell you where the basis is from, but first: did you watch Captain America: The First Avenger?

I think it's because we haven't been able to get a good understanding of Steve/Captain America as a person from the two movies most people who write him as such. The Captain America movie showed some elements of him being an nice guy/nagging mother leader.
As much as I tell myself how it does seem some fics take this a little too far, I can't help love it because it's totally my fetish.

I didn't see him as a self-righteous prick, but he's definitely no boy scout. He was very forward and blunt and even obnoxious (in an entertaining way). I think it's because comics!Cap is super-nice, but comics!Cap was fatherly and mature and stern and really intimidating, which is...not that much like movie!Cap, so in order to get some form of super-nice-Cap into movie-fic, the fandom came up with blushing!innocent!Cap. And blushing!innocent!Cap grinds my gears. The man led a squad of guerrilla fighters in WWII Europe and probably killed a couple hundred people. Seriously. What.

These are all things I liked about movie!Cap btw. I mean, I love comics!Cap even more, but his general persona is way too nice and calm and well-adjusted to fit in with the ragtag misfits of the movie Avengers. And actually, comics!Cap wasn't always nice — he was kind of a giant mess when he first got out of the ice. He spent a whole lot of time bitching about everyone being all '60s-ish and making Rick Jones dress up like Bucky and behave like the new Bucky until Rick finally quit and told him he was being a giant creeper. And he and the Avengers totally treated the team like a super-secret-boyband (IIRC, they kicked Iron Man out for a week for being late to a meeting or something). Which, you know, is kinda similar to the haphazard immaturity of the movie!Avengers, and a super-nice-Cap would be pretty out of place among the early Avengers in both continuities.
