Just here to say: THANK YOU SO MUCH TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO RESPONDED TO MY THREAD! I looked up all the recommendations on Wikipedia and TV Tropes, which lead to me discovering even more interesting-looking manga. And now my "comics I want to read" list is a LOT longer than it was the day before yesterday. So yeah, that should keep me occupied for a looooooong time while I wait for Marvel and DC to stop sucking. Again, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

Oh man, I missed this thread... if your list isn't too crazy-full, I want to throw in a rec for a short 2-volume comedy/parody magical girl manga, Carat by Watanabe Yoshitomo. It pokes fun at a lot of tropes (it kind of feels like Ouran Host Club with a pinch of Cromartie High School for the magical girl genre), but there are bits of light sweetness. (The defining moment for me is probably when the straightforward and relatively logical main character is under a sleep attack, and in order to stay awake, promptly starts hitting her head on her magic staff. Although to be fair, her only magical powers are summoning udon...)
