Can't say I agree, but I get this. One thing I notice watching movies that are even ten, fifteen or twenty years old is how much movie-making style changes over even a short time.

I wouldn't say they're bad, but iconic for its time-- and very advanced for what film making was back then. It would be very hard to release something like the original trilogy to today's audiences and have it explode at the level it did back then. Film has evolved since then.

They are, however, still incredibly enjoyable and masterworks as film. Then again, I'm someone who still believes that models and makeup are way more effective than CGI.

I personally disagree, but to each their own. I think given the fact that it was straight up trying to emulate the feel of the old adventure serials is an excuse for some of the cheesiness, but I think they were made very well, not just for their special effects but for the story and plot. The character arc of Han Solo, for example, is still one of my favorites.

Lots of things have changed since the original trilogy was made, some film conventions, but they're still incredibly watchable movies, far better than the prequels.

I'm afraid we must end you now.

In all seriousness there are things about the original trilogy that just hasn't aged well and all of Lucas 'improvements' haven't helped.

Nuh-uh, I could hardly remember the first trilogy when I was a kid. I borrowed a dvd set from a coworker a few years ago and I though it was great.

I love the OT, but there's certain things that feel disappointing when you're no longer a child - like Vader Vs Obi Wan should be the coolest fight ever, and it kinda is in the mind of a child but adult me kinda cringes at that because it seems SO limp.

Also I don't mind the Ewoks over much, try saying THAT to most Star Wars fans. I find them a bit irritating but meh they don't ruin ROTJ for me.

I have so much hair-pulling and teeth-gnashing over everything that's went down since I can't actually remember how I felt about the movies without all the bs clouding my opinion.

I just have such a clusterfuck of emotion about Star Wars.

I think they're great movies, full of iconic moments. Even if they feel old to a young new viewer, the story and the characters are still compelling and fun.

That's just not true for everyone. Some people do genuinely love the movies as much now as they ever did! They'll always be some of my favorites too.

But really, even if some people do feel this way and a lot of their love of the series is because of nostalgia, what does it matter as long as they enjoy it?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-20 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
This is exactly my argument for why I enjoy the prequels. It's mindless entertainment, people, don't get your panties in a bunch.

(what was once revolutionary is no more, and I was introduced to them to the movies in a time when everyone and everything was ripping them off)

They definitely seem cheesier now that they did when I was younger, but that's part of why I like them. They are really fun movies, and that's why they are such a huge success.

i'm in a somewhat similar boat, i've never seen the original trilogy and all the people who say it's great have just built it up to the point where i doubt it'd ever live up to that.

The thing about nostalgia is that some works are genuinely good enough to bear the weight of it, and some aren't. I think a good test is to ask yourself if you'd give a copy of this to a friend who'd never seen it before. I think SW is iconically and evocatively strong enough to still be worth a little nostalgiagasm. (well...except maybe A New Hope. It aged fast and got boring).

You're heading into dangerous territory when you make such blanket assumptions about other people's reasons. I don't care if the nostalgia is what you like about them. Don't try to tell me why I like them.
citrinesunset: (Default)

[personal profile] citrinesunset 2012-07-21 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I somewhat agree. They haven't held up well for me over the years, though I still love them out of nostalgia.

But I mostly think they're showing their age. It's been a while since I saw them, but I don't know that I'd call them technically bad. I think Lucas himself has a lot of weaknesses as a writer and director, but the original trilogy actors do a pretty good job of making it work. The technology looks dated, but it was great at the time.

I think they're iconic movies, but aside from the massive fandom surrounding them, I'm not sure if they have long-lasting appeal the way many acclaimed classic movies do. I'm not sure if what made them great when they came out is something that many modern viewers can appreciate.

[personal profile] majorshipper 2012-07-21 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I fucking love the original trilogy, and I think they're not all that super fantastic. But, then again, they're the type of movie I watch. I don't watch ~deep stuff unless it's recced to me.

I think one thing that made me love Star Wars was all the EU I read. *shrugs*
velvet_mace: (Default)

[personal profile] velvet_mace 2012-07-21 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
It was very groundbreaking when it came out, but since there have been so many movies and shows inspired by it that it seems almost cliche.

There are dated parts to be sure: hair styles, jokes, special effects. I may be more generous with the ewoks than most people, just because I think they are hideous rather than cute. But I still think it's a fine example of the heroes journey. When Lando says he made a deal that would keep his city safe and then the door opens on Darth Vader, I still get the same delicious shudder.

I don't find it amazing, but I like it for reasons other than nostalgia. And I genuinely like the prequels, too. Yes, even Phantom Menace.

i think people like you don't really understand cinema.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-21 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I hear you OP. I really do - I'm not a huge fan of SWs in general [I saw them as a child, and even then I didn't actually like them that much], but I know enough about them to at least pass. So a lot of people seem to automatically assume I love the series...which can get a little awkward when you have to explain that 'No, I'm really more of a Star Trek/Stargate fan'.

But some of the die-hard fans *can* go really overboard though.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-21 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
This is how I feel about Star Treks 2, 3 and 4 (that's my trilogy!) - Though honestly I have no clue if other fans will admit that they're not that great. Well they'll probably say #4 sucked but you can't watch 2/3 without watching 4 since it brings them full circle even if each movie is a stand alone plot.

Ehh. A lot of the stuff I love isn't The Best Ever - it doesn't have to be. You enjoy what you enjoy! The fact that Return of the Jedi is my favourite film of all time hurts absolutely no one. Who cares if it isn't a ~cinematic masterpiece~?
kallanda_lee: (Default)

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2012-07-21 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I think you have to see them in the original context.

They were absolutely revolutionary when they came out: nothing like this has ever been done before, in respect to special effects and in creating a consistent, vast universe.

The story is actually a very classical "hero's journey" - not innovative, but very much rooted in old story traditions.

Looking at them today, I think they still hold up nicely.
