I really think the dude is awesome at short stories, but can't really handle any longer medium. I think the fact that he can just keep writing gets the better of him, and so he ends up meanderings and focusing on a whole bunch of shit that doesn't need to happen in the story.

Also, I think he's really bad at writing protagonists.

But my favorite book of his is Neverwhere (which has probably one of his weakest protagonists), so, you know. I just think the pace is a lot tighter than he normally writes, and the premise is just really fun altogether. I want more Neverwhere, dangit.

I sort of agree with this, except that I think Sandman is really good. However, the structure of Sandman is filled with shorter narratives so in a way it's almost a collection of short stories, just with the same cast and some overarching themes. And a great supporting cast.

As for his novels, I've read Anansi Boys, Stardust, and American Gods. I like the latter the best of the bunch but it was really just an okay book. I want to like him more but his characters just fall flat.
