I love the Graveyard book and read it pretty quickly. Same with M Is For Magic. I never finished Neverwhere because it just dragged. I was so...bored with it, I just read the ending online and brought it back to the library. I haven't tried to read anything else by him...

It's cool if you dislike them. Personally, I love his novels and don't really have much experience with his comics, so idk if I'd feel differently about them. American Gods is just IMO one of the best modern books I've read, and I adore it.

I've yet to revisit Neverwhere, but I've been meaning to because it's going to give me massive London nostalgia.

I've only read Stardust and Good Omens, but yeah. I agree OP.

(That's not to say that I didn't like Good Omens. I just didn't like it as much as Terry Pratchett's other solo work.)

I didn't like Coraline, but I want to try Anasazi Boys just because it sounds better (and the main characters are POC)

You're not alone. I adored the Sandman comics and his episode of Who, but I couldn't get through American Gods or Anansi Boys. And I had high hopes for the latter book. :|

I agree, pretty much. I'm so-so with his novel-form work, but I do find the pacing dreadful. Some books of his I can't stand (Stardust, for instance) and others I pretty much just forged through despite the shortcomings.

The only book by him I actually thoroughly enjoyed enough to re-read was Neverwhere.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-20 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I know how you feel, OP. I don't much care for his writing style and I think his characters are honestly sort of... bland. They're there to advance the plot and reflect cool ideas but as far as character development and emotional involvement goes I'm just not there with him, which is a pity because that's one of my main drives in reading books. He's definitely not a bad writer, but it just does nothing for me. It's just one of those things, I guess \o/ Don't worry though, I've seen secrets like this before and there's more people out there who feel the same way.

It probably doesn't help either that I am super ADD in reading anything and when reading American Gods the amount of random background stories that pop up out of nowhere and are never mentioned again just made me dump the book in a desk drawer and never pick it back up again hahahaha... ha

I'll agree that he has wicked awesome ideas and plot lines but they're probably better in a comic format for me which is more show don't tell by definition of the medium.

eh, I feel the same way. I enjoyed The Graveyard Book on audiobook because he narrated it beautifully, and Good Omens is probably my favourite book ever, but otherwise I find his writing dry and stilted.

I like his books, but I love his graphic works. There's a whole different level of sublime at work there, that his text works just can't quite equal.

I'm writing my master's thesis on some of Gaiman's work! Stardust and a couple of short stories :) It's holding up under scrutiny.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-21 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone seen Gaiman live?? He's in Edinburgh in a couple of weeks (with Amanda Palmer, but idc about her) and I'm considering making a short trip. It'll set me back a bit of £££ though, so I'd like to hear experiences before I buy my ticket.

I feel sort of weird because I am totally the other way around -- I like his books to greater or lesser degrees: I love American Gods and Neverwhere. Stardust was a "pretty good kids' book." Anansi Boys felt a little pointless but it kept me turning pages, so that's mixed. Haven't read Good Omens or Coraline. Don't feel any particular urge to, either. IDK.

But I tried to get into Sandman because everyone raves about it, and it just left me so flat. I was bored all the way through the two I picked up and if they hadn't been incredibly fast reads (which for the price, argh. I know, I know, paying for the art too -- but the art was not that awesome to me), I wouldn't have finished them.

I really need to read more of his comic work. I was underwhelmed by the adult novels Gaiman did pre-Anansi Boys (that includes Good Omens), but dude is amazing at young adult books. His ideas are very smart and sometimes he strikes pure gold, but for me he's like Joss Whedon, his fans blow waaaay too much smoke up his butt.

It's interesting—apparently Neverwhere and Smoke & Mirrors striking me as his strongest works besides Sandman is a rare opinion. I found American Gods too obvious (save for the one thing that should have been all along, sigh), Anansi Boys lifeless, Fragile Things uninspired, and the good Gaiman things about Good Omens dragged down by Pratchett's influence.

Different strokes and all that.

All authors are flawed. Some people just don't particularly want to hear about those flaws.

I was okay for his book pacing, but I have a special place in my heart for his comics. Compared to the other comics I was collecting it was just so thought provoking and amazing and id tickling.

American Gods was a great idea wasted on a meandering, predictable plot and boring main character. I wish he'd stuck that idea back into the drawer until he had a story to match it. I read Neverwhere when I lived in London, so my feelings for it were about more than the book itself. I probably won't ever reread it.

In my case, I thought Sandman was good, loved Good Omens (but probably more for the Pratchett mix), but when it comes too his novels I have weird mixed feelings. I love the concepts behind them, and some of the secondary characters are so cool, but the pacing is annoying, the endings are blah, and his adult protagonists are too bland and archetypal* to care about them. It disappoints me because the ideas are so good but the execution kills it for me. I enjoy his kiddie stories better, like The Graveyard Book, Coraline, and Odd and the Frost Giants.

* Look, an apparently normal male dude gets dragged into a fantasy setup and protests a lot, but in the end he was ~special~ all along and stays in cool land! Again!

(Anonymous) 2012-07-21 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I really think the dude is awesome at short stories, but can't really handle any longer medium. I think the fact that he can just keep writing gets the better of him, and so he ends up meanderings and focusing on a whole bunch of shit that doesn't need to happen in the story.

Also, I think he's really bad at writing protagonists.

But my favorite book of his is Neverwhere (which has probably one of his weakest protagonists), so, you know. I just think the pace is a lot tighter than he normally writes, and the premise is just really fun altogether. I want more Neverwhere, dangit.

Love the comics, short stories and Good Omens, like American Gods, dislike everything else. I think he works best at a short story length unless he's got collaborators (artist or writer, doesn't matter). So the American Gods TV series could be really awesome.

I suppose I'd call myself a "fan" of his work - I've got several of his books - but I can definitely see where you're coming from, OP.

The kids books - Coraline & The Graveyard Book - were excellent. So was The Sandman. His collaboration with Pratchett was also good.
But I found myself enjoying Neverwhere & Good Omens despite the main characters.

The weak point, I think, is the main characters, especially in the adult books. Another bland male character gets dragged into a world of wackiness! He needs to stop relying on that contrast.

His secondary characters - like Mr Croup & Mr Vandemar - are far more memorable.
