I suppose I'd call myself a "fan" of his work - I've got several of his books - but I can definitely see where you're coming from, OP.

The kids books - Coraline & The Graveyard Book - were excellent. So was The Sandman. His collaboration with Pratchett was also good.
But I found myself enjoying Neverwhere & Good Omens despite the main characters.

The weak point, I think, is the main characters, especially in the adult books. Another bland male character gets dragged into a world of wackiness! He needs to stop relying on that contrast.

His secondary characters - like Mr Croup & Mr Vandemar - are far more memorable.

Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandermar are only memorable because they're based on Penn & Teller. So there's that, too.
