I liked how Gaiman did it in American Gods (spoilers follow) by making the character's nickname Low-Key Lyesmith, playing on the liar theme.

Haha yes. Mr. Wednesday was Odin. I liked that.

That reveal just bowled me over. I hadn't noticed the name at all so I was just amazed to see that minor character I'd forgotten from 200 pages ago pop up again and well, be that. It might be my favourite moment in the whole book (or how being an inattentive reader can be very satisfying).

LOL EVERYONE I KNOW (myself included) said the same thing. I still think it's amazing. I love how you go "Low-Key" ... "Lo-ki" about the same time Shadows does the same XD

Yep, this. It was really well done.

I think that sort of horrible pun would have ruined the book for me if I had made it that far into it.

Low-Key is introduced on the first page of chapter 1. Clearly you didn't make it very far at all!

re: the rest of the thread: I don't know if it was that I was on a mythology kick when I read American Gods for the first time, but I picked up on Low-Key = Loki right away. It just seemed so on-the-nose to me, so I've never really liked the choice. Mr Wednesday was much more subtle, imo- it also happens to reflect the natural progression of the role of gods in human culture within the story. Norse Odin > AngloSaxon Woden and Woden's Day > modern Wednesday.

Years after reading American Gods for the first time, I'm still slapping myself over not seeing that twist coming. It was so obvious! I knew enough Norse mythology to get it! How did I not see that coming?!

I actually hated how obvious it was. If it was just Low-Key and no last name or (random first name) Lyesmith, it would have been fine. Both of them together was over killed. I loved Gaiman's play with Mr. Wednesday, Whiskey Jack, and Mr. Nancy though.
