Considering some of the names I've seen in real life (I literally know a guy who named his kid Mage), Thor and Loki don't actually seem that weird to me in AU stories.

I liked how Gaiman did it in American Gods (spoilers follow) by making the character's nickname Low-Key Lyesmith, playing on the liar theme.

I've known people with a lot stranger names than that. And I knew a Thor when I was a kid! So it doesn't throw me at all. I just assume their parents were into Norse mythology.

My mom almost named me Jazz lol. Thor and Loki are at least names.

I don't mind the names and I think not all people would automatically know who has which alias which could make it pretty confusing.

Honestly, some people name their kids really out there things. Thor and Loki might give me pause, but not for long. I’m pretty sure I ran into a guy named Zeus. I knew a guy named Paris. Nevaeh (heaven backwards) is apparently a very popular girls name.

Y'know, Thor and Loki are normal names in certain countries. I've known more people named Tor than I have Donald, and my cousin named his child Loke.

I've met several guys named Thor in the US, where most Avengers modern!AUs take place.

If anything, it's not that the names are weird, but the fact that they flat out wouldn't have an etymology anymore... But it's fanfic, I'm willing to suspend my disbelief that much.

Aside from the now-well-canvased Those Names Aren't That Weird deal, are these "perfectly good aliases" part of the movie canon? Because I certainly don't recall them. Especially for Loki.

Not really related but the next pets I get, whenever that is, are in danger of being called Loki and Thor.

And yeah as others have said, wouldn't put it past some parents given the insane names you hear - especially from celebrities.

i get that, the supernatural fandom has that issue too with AUs involving the angels. i feel like 'cas' could come from 'lucas' or something normal. maybe his older brother lucian or something took the nickname 'luc/luke' and cas got left with the scraps, idk.

it's just really odd to me that in a universe where christianity exists somebody would name their kid lucifer, and then go around naming the other kids after 'good' angels.

I was named after a goddess, so it's not all that weird to me. Of course, that name has been adapted into common usage.

There are people named these things, and depending on the fic I prefer they keep the original names. Thor and Loki are very foreign and giving them foreign names works.

for some reason i just can't suspend my disbelief enough to allow for a bunch of modern americans named after norse gods hanging around the place

Well, there are lots of people in the US named Diana, Minerva, Venus, Juno, and Jesus. I've even met a few Jupiters and one Osiris. And I'm pretty sure Thor or the equivalent isn't that uncommon in Iceland. So it doesn't break suspension of disbelief for me at all. YMMV, of course.

I get this, but I guess some authors just have a hard time calling them anything else. I've met a Loki IRL, so that one isn't as strange to me as Thor.

...Because there are people who honestly have weirder names than 'Thor' and 'Loki' in real life [I know someone was named after Lothlorien]. Plus, that's what character's names are. Changing over to use the 'alias' has the potential to be confusing for people reading it.

I've noticed that when people change characters' names in AUs, they tend to be really OOC much easier than with their normal names.

Honestly, when it comes to fanfiction and especially AUs, names are the strongest link in what can sometimes be a very, very tenuous connection. I don't blame writers for holding on to them, even if there are "canon" counterparts. When they aren't the name that really describes the character to you in your mind, they often don't serve their purpose.

I don't even like changing names for genderswap and I love genderswap. Thus, genderswap only really works for me in canon where characters are typically known by their last names, like Star Trek. An altered name really brings me out of the story almost completely.

In summation: I ain't even mad.

I actually know someone whose kids are named Thor and Odin so...
It's possible.

Well when you're changing so many other things in a fic - the setting, the conflicts, and to some extent the character, just by moving them or altering their backstory - then changing the names can seem like one thing too many. I mean if I'm a Thor fan, if i sit down to read a fic and it's about a barista called Donald, then it can feel very distanced from the character I love. Names are a really important part of identity. I can see why authors would be reluctant to change that link.
