Sorry, anon, but personally, I can't ship them. I can only see them as friends, no matter how many Doctor/Donna fics I read.

But overall the Doctor's canonical relationships are a bit lacking, I agree. Rose was on New Who way too long (not to mention Ten's ANGST over her), and River's life being centered around the Doctor's is a huge turnoff.

It's okay to not ship things! Or to ship them. Whichever.

I LOVE their friendship more than any other on New Who and constantly miss Donna but I don't ship them either. It's not that the idea turns me off so much as I just can't picture it. But then again I think that has to do more with me not being interested in the Doctor paired with anyone, than me not being into Doctor/Donna.

I'm generally against the Doctor being canonically shipped with anyone, and the fact that the two ships he's had are so poorly written doesn't help. Maybe if they featured him an a mutually happy, healthy relationship, I might change my mind. Also, NGL, if they had the guts to have him in a relationship a guy, or maybe even a person of indeterminate gender, I'd be more interested.

Tossing in same sex relationships - which they've done in delightfully CASUAL, playful ways (see, for example, s6e7) would be done if there was a good character and plot for it.

And as for "a mutually happy, healthy relationship" ... did you miss the polyamorous) subtext of Eleven/Ponds (both in series and in official photoshoots? It was all but the dangly bits.

1. There was, his name was Jack. Canton was also cool, but he was already spoken for (he talks about wanting to get married, so he and his boyfriend are obviously pretty serious).

2. I find the "good character and plot" thing a pretty weak argument given that the straight relationships the Doctor's been in haven't featured either of those. imo. I mean, look, I like both Rose and River as characters, but as love interests for the Doctor, not so much. Rose became needy and selfish, and River's whole life revolves the Doctor, not to mention the show focuses way too much on her as this super-special awesome person who deserves a whole half a damn season to explain her background. She can be very awesome, and when she's just this cool lady the Doctor and his companion(s) run into and have adventures with (like the two Weeping Angels episodes in S5), I like her a lot. But there's no reason whatsoever that so much of the fucking plot needs to revolve around her backstory.

I don't think we were necessarily supposed to think anything was actually going on, but there was definitely some wink-wink-nudge-nudge in there, and I'm pretty sure that Amy's at least thought about it a few times.

Haha, you're right, I guess I was just being conservative with my choice of words so as not to seem too rabid. Also, she obviously is (or has been) interested in him, but we don't have canon confirmation that she's thought about a threesome or poly relationship or anything. I think the thought has crossed her mind, though. I know it would if I was her.

Fair enough. I like Amy for the most part, but some of the shit she pulls really bugs me; like hitting on a guy in front of her husband, or not taking "no" for an answer...

After that one episode, I can only ship the doctor with the Tardis itself. Be it in meat form or otherwise.

Ditto. I loved their friendship (heck, s4 was my favorite season until s5 rolled around because of that), and they displayed no attraction to one another, despite the chemistry (which I read as friendly chemistry anyway).

Agreed about Rose, and especially River, holy crap.
