Sometimes in shows I wish they just wouldn't write romances at all. And then fans who saw chemistry between two characters could just happily pretend whoever they liked were actually together.

Sometimes (not often!) I wish that too, but that's not likely to happen either imo.

98% of the time if I don't care for the pairings in a show I just head-canon them away or ignore them, but there have been a couple instances where it almost made me stop watching.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-23 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
i pretty much feel the same unless the point of the story is the romance.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-23 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I do, too.

Yeah, ambiguity is the best.

True, true, true!!!

(Anonymous) 2012-07-22 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, anon, but personally, I can't ship them. I can only see them as friends, no matter how many Doctor/Donna fics I read.

But overall the Doctor's canonical relationships are a bit lacking, I agree. Rose was on New Who way too long (not to mention Ten's ANGST over her), and River's life being centered around the Doctor's is a huge turnoff.
elaminator: (Legend of the Seeker: Kahlan)

not op, lol, but

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-07-22 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay to not ship things! Or to ship them. Whichever.

I LOVE their friendship more than any other on New Who and constantly miss Donna but I don't ship them either. It's not that the idea turns me off so much as I just can't picture it. But then again I think that has to do more with me not being interested in the Doctor paired with anyone, than me not being into Doctor/Donna.

Agreed about River.

I prefer them just as friends but either way you slice it, their chemistry on and off screen was phenomenal.

I think I like The Doctor and Donna as friends (and the way David and Catherine seemed off screen) because it reminds me of a sort of weird friendship I had with a mentor. It could never be anything more than that but we did verbally spar quite a lot, but there was definitely a lot of respect there too.

I don't ship them at all but I agree their chemistry was amazing.

I am not the least bit interested in romantic Doctor/Donna, but I will read the heck out of friends-with-benefits stories for them. So - different strokes, I guess?

You are not alone, OP. I ship it too. Although I do also ship Doctor/River and Doctor/Master. But Doctor/Donna is my OTP. I had so many reasons in my head for why they wouldn't work and why I shouldn't ship them, but those went out of my head by the third Donna episode. They have so much chemistry and are pretty much everything I love in a pairing.

I do also love their platonic relationship, though. They are awesome in canon even if they aren't romantically involved.

I'd advise you to stay away from the fandom, though. There is so much Rose bashing in the fics that it is really hard to find good Doctor/Donna fics.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-22 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not canon, but it's obvious (to me) that Donna's relationship with the Doctor was supposed to be more than any potential romance she might have. She wants to travel with him forever, as his friend. Just look at how RTD shows that she (and Martha earlier) moved on/is OK without the Doctor: she's getting married. It's not that she awesomely independent again, it's that she's got a man to replace the Doctor in her life.

I half agree? I don't ship them romantically, but Donna and her relationship with the Doctor is the best thing the show's ever done by a mile, for me. I just loved them so much.

Totally down for some friends-with-benefits stuff though!

I like Donna as a character a lot, and although I don't ship them romantically, I love their friendship. I just try to pretend that her first appearance happened at a different time.

I always thought Eleven and Amy were the poor man's version of Ten and Donna.

Then again, I absolutely DESPISED Amy - wasn't even able to bring myself to watch the end of her season, she turned me off so much.

[identity profile] niuxita21.livejournal.com 2012-07-22 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
YES YES YES. God, I thought I was the only one who ACTUALLY shipped this two together beyond the simple BFFs everyone sees them as. I agree, their chemistry was OFF THE CHARTS and it only took the scene on the rooftop where the Doctor gives Donna his coat on The Runaway Bride for me to fall madly in love with them. I still miss them. :(

(Anonymous) 2012-07-23 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I like to see it as a mostly friendship relationship, with one-sided romantic feelings on Ten's side. He just seemed so baffled at the idea that she didn't see him as a sexual/romantic prospect, and it amused me to imagine that he had this major crush on her that he couldn't acknowledge (because ROSE, obviously), and that she didn't even notice, but it was always there.

But I also hate all Doctor/anyone human ships, so.

I never warmed up to Donna. She's been my least favorite companion so far in the new series.

Having said that, I have to admit that they did have amazing chemistry. Tennant's best chemistry was with her.

Whatever floats your boat - I'm sure you're not the only one.

Personally I found the lack of (canon) romantic tension between them pleasantly refreshing.

I was so torn about them. To be honest, I preferred them as friends and was glad there wasn't really any romance or romantic subtext between them. Not only did I think they made great friends, but I thought keeping it as just friends was in-character and probably good for both of them.

But I also loved the chemistry between them, and I could see myself shipping the Doctor with Donna before any other companion of his to date.

I ship it

I know it's not canon, but their on screen chemistry was so much better than anything RTD or Moffat ever came up with

/OP, can you make the white outline for the blue text thicker next time? The text over Ten's suit is fine but the text over the dress and Tardis' walls looks...pixelated? It's doing weird things to my eyes :(

I love them as platonic super friends, but idgaf because Tate and Tennant had such awesome chemistry so much that I would take all variations of their relationship if it meant more of them generally together.

THIS. Their dynamic reminds me of a lot of slash ships actually.
