Trying to get into a comic series

(Anonymous) 2012-07-22 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I would like to start reading the batwoman comic (the lesbian and art are both of my interests. The art looks reall good), but I'm not sure what this particular series/edition/whatever is called. I am assuming she has her own comic book series, but I really don't know much about comics and wiki isn't helping me work out WHICH batwoman comic is all about ?Kane?. I'm vaguely aware it came out recently but I'm not sure where/how to read this since she seems to be a recurring character, but I really just want to read the "main series" so to speak.

I want to buy them, but I don't want to ask the counter person in the comic store. I feel awkward enough being in there (it's seriously a comic store in the basement, which oddly enough really puts me on edge. Also last time I was there counter-man was a dickhead because I was buying Futurama)

So if anyone knows what is called or the issue number and..what production company since the store isn't alphabetical but by ?company/publisher? (i.e dark horse) I'll be very greatful

Or a break down of where to start

Because I'm lost, I've no idea how they expect to get new readers if I can't even work out where a certain character's story starts/is the main character.

You can start on Batwoman: Elegy which gives Kate's origin story from the very beginning. And then go onwards to the Batwoman series which started last september.

Oh and: Batwoman Elegy is the name of the story arc which you can find in one volume, but you can also find the arc in Detective Comics (issues 854-860). Company is DC comics.

That looks like the nice art of the one I've seen about!

Do these comic stories conclude and end? Just I would like to buy them and I love having completed sets and it's going to drive me nuts if towards the end it overlaps with some other characters story that I would need for the conclusion (and so on and so forth. Kind of like the beginning is so blurry at times.)

I was going to ask more when I noticed there is a hardcover version. Hardcovers of anything are my one true love in life. Will that ve all the issues?

Sorry for the question game. I'm just so confused by the comics and universes and story overlap. I don't want to read everything, just this one batwoman I've read about/seen gorgeous art of. (which appears to be this so lots of thanks! I'm sure I can buy it from the store or get it ordered in)

Also is Batwoman #1 the same or a new one? I see the same artist works on them and so far the covers are compelling enough, I just want to make sure I'm not buying the wrong ones. I only have so much space on my shelves

It's okay, don't worry, you can ask anything! :-)

So: Batman:Elegy is the name of the hardcover volume and it's a standalone.
Batwoman #1(onwards) is also with Kate Kane, and with the same artist from Elegy, at least for many issues. It is still ongoing, however, you can buy the first arc, Batwoman: Hydrology in hardcover!

There's also plenty of information here: http://dcwomenkickingass.tumblr.com/tagged/batwoman

Fair warning, the later batwoman artist is not the same one, and, in my opinion, not as good. But anon is not talking about those issues anyway, so you are good.

Thanks for the info. I might have to cautiously eye the Batwoman one to see where the art goes. I'm just as picky about art as the story/character :U

Yeah, I was disappointed to find that out after getting Elegy because the art was one of the things that drew me to the series (besides Kate Kane being a BAMF of course).

ARGH ASSHOLE CLERKS my instant rageahol. I will never understand the point in trying to dissuade a customer from returning because of elitist or dickbag reasons. Particularly when the dolt doing it isn't the one who buys the "tasteless" stock, and doesn't give THAT person their shit piece of mind. Idiots!

If there's no other shop alternative where you live, you could always purchase online, or get into purchasing digital copies.

Seconding all of the above awesome thread though.

I'll probably be going online! While I'd love to support our local comic store and all that supportive crap, I'm not going down there again. There's a few Australian book stores that sell it online, I'll grab one of those :D
